MONTEREY, Tenn. -- "If somebody told me this happened to them, I absolutely would not believe this could happen in America." That was the reaction of a New Jersey man who found out just how risky it can be to carry cash through Tennessee. For more than a year, NewsChannel 5 Investigates has been shining a light on a practice that some call "policing for profit." In this latest case, a Monterey police officer took $22,000 off the driver -- even though he had committed no crime. "You live in the United States, you think you have rights -- and...

Several emergency officials are responding to Elkins High School for a possible report of an officer being shot. A suspect reportedly is on scene and is on foot, but has not yet been captured. Emergency scanner traffic indicates the suspect is described as while male, possibly in his 50s, with a brown T-shirt and glasses. Police have locked down the school, blocked the Beverly 5-lane and are searching the area, including local stores. Police also are searching for a possible suspect in an attempted carjacking in the area behind Kmart, and it is unclear if it's the same person. Additional...

You can be right, or you can be married; take your pick. I can’t remember who told me that, but I do remember that they were only half-joking. The other half, the serious half, is exceedingly important. This is why. Many therapists aren’t crazy about doing marital therapy. It’s complicated and messy, and it often feels out of control. In the worst case scenario, the therapist has front row seats to a regularly-scheduled prize fight. But I love to do marital therapy. Why? Maybe I enjoy the work because I keep one simple principle in mind: if marriage is going...

So, West Virginia has won three different BCS bowl games in the last six years - with three different coaches no less. What to make of this? Well, first of all, it puts the Mountaineers in a pretty select group of college football programs that have won three or more of these since the system was created in 1998 – eight programs to be exact. There’s Ohio State, USC, Florida, LSU, Texas, Miami and Oklahoma that have won at least three BCS bowl games in the last 14 years. And now, um, catch your breath here, West Virginia. That’s right,...

Trail Ridge Road will not open for Memorial Day weekend because heavy snow has hampered plowing efforts. Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States, climbs to 12,183 feet and connects the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake through Rocky Mountain National Park. The road traditionally opens for Memorial Day weekend. Last year, it opened May 28. However, park snowplow operators found a deeper than usual winter snowpack when plowing began earlier this month, and more snow fell in storms last week. Park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson said there are 17-foot drifts above Rainbow Curve on...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An Alum Creek man has been arrested after neighbors allegedly found him standing over the dead body of a stolen pygmy goat while wearing women's underwear. Mark Lucas Thompson, 19, of Greenview Road was taken into custody early Monday at his home. Deputies had dealt with the man before and believe him to be mentally unstable. Thompson told deputies he had been high on bath salts for the last three days, said Cpl. Sean Snuffer, a detective with the sheriff's office. Deputy J.S. Shackelford was dispatched about 3:15 a.m. Monday to the home on Quebec Drive to...

Sean Penn caused a stir right off the bat when he wouldn't follow everyone else in putting his hand over his heart as the room stood and sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Hilton International Ballroom. The surly star then spent dinner all over new flame Scarlett Johansson. "She plopped down in his lap, and they were kissing," described a shocked witness. The two left the room for "an hour," sources said, and Penn came back to the table with his tie askew.

Rapper Afroman, best known for his songs about marijuana use, was sued today for failing to appear at a concert at The Patio at the Continent in Columbus, Ohio. The lawsuit, filed in the Franklin County Municipal Court, alleges that Afroman forgot to appear at an April 9, 2011 concert scheduled at The Patio. “We set a date and signed a contract. I even sent the deposit to Afroman himself, right away. They must have just forgotten about our show,” said Nathan Pettry, a concert promoter working with The Patio. Afroman is best known for his hit song “Because I...

Melita Jackson, who died in 2004 at the age of 70, left her estate of £486,000 to animal charities, making no provision for Heather Ilott, her only child. Three of the country’s most senior judges said Mrs Ilott, 50, should receive a share of the will, in a decision which could lead to more people challenging relatives’ bequests. ... At a hearing in February, John Collins, representing Mrs Ilott, told the judges that his client’s final breakdown with her mother was over the naming of her daughter, Ellen, after Mrs Jackson’s sister-in-law, whom she did not like. ...

All of southern West Virginia is buzzing about the big gator found at Upper Mud River Reservoir. The area manager for the Upper Mud River Wildlife Management Area killed the alligator, which measured more than five feet in length after finding the reptile on the banks of the popular fishing water. "We actually got two separate reports about it," said DNR Fisheries Biologist Zack Brown. "They were estimating it was about five feet and they were pretty accurate in their estimation." The reports indicated the gator was up on the bank and in the water. He was shot along the...

I know that in this paranoid world, you never approach a small child who is by herself, take her by the hand and walk out of a store with her in search of mommy. But I am not 14 years old. I am not Edwin. Last week, Edwin went to the Burlington Coat Factory store on West Colonial Drive with his mother. He saw a 3-year-old girl without a parent. If he had it to do all over again, if he could see the cops, the handcuffs, the TV cameras and the jail cell all awaiting him, I imagine the...

(Actual dumb editorial removed, this is the first comment.) This take on the situation is so incredibly wrong-headed, I scarcely know where to start. Let me start by saying I´m a former American newspaper editor who retired early at age 55 a decade ago and moved to a mountaintop in the middle of Mexico. I have become a Mexican citizen. My wife is Mexican. I speak Spanish all day long. I know Mexicans. I am one. Some of my relatives are current or former illegal aliens who stole into the U.S. I also am personally acquainted with others who´ve done...
