QUOTE FOR THE DAY II: "The issue in advancing newsroom diversity is that you have to get people into gate-keeper roles. You have to force your hiring managers to find talent and demand that every pool of applicants for any job includes at least one woman and one minority." - Arthur Sulzberger Jr., on how he imposes racial preferences in every single job at the paper (except his own), August 8, 2002.

Jesse Ventura's proclamation of the Fourth of July as "Indivisible Day" in Minnesota, an order sought by an atheist group, has upset the secretary of state and others who see it as a slap at religion. The proclamation, which Ventura signed Tuesday, emphasizes the constitutional separation between church and state. "Eternal vigilance must be maintained to guard against those who seek to stifle ideas, establish a narrow orthodoxy, and divide our nation along arbitrary lines of race, ethnicity and religious belief...

KEY FEMALE WORDS 1."Fine"This is the word women use at the end of any argument when they feel they are right but can't stand to hear you argue any longer. It means that you should shut up. (NEVER use "fine" to describe how she looks. This will cause you to have one of those arguments.) 2."Five minutes"This is half an hour. It is equivalent to the five minutes that your football game is going to last before you take out the trash, so women feel that it's an even trade. 3."Nothing" "Nothing" means something and you should be on your ...

Couldn't help but pass this one on! ENJOY!!! This is an article submitted to a 1999 Louisville Sentinel contest to find out who had the wildest Christmas dinner. This won first prize. Christmas with Louise As a joke, my brother used to hang a pair of panty hose over his fireplace before Christmas. He said all he wanted was for Santa to fill them. What they say about Santa checking the list twice must be true because every Christmas morning, although Jay's kids' stockings were overflowed, his poor pantyhose hung sadly empty. One year I decided to make his dream ...

Don't worry about going to war -- it's come to you JOE SOUCHERAY Pioneer Press Columnist Judging by the phone calls and e-mails to the newspaper, some of the young fellows quoted the other day in a story about the prospects of a draft are not coming off too well with the public. I guess the kids were thought to be grousing, fidgeting or otherwise hemming and hawing at the idea of having to put on the uniform for Uncle Sam. In other words, most of the young people quoted in the story were saying the same things that college ...

Palm Beach County Health Department officials just held a joint news conference with the State of Florida health officials and the City of Boca Raton health officials. The topic of the news conference was the second person to be diagnosed with Anthrax. These four people spent the first ten minutes congratulating each other and getting "such a warm feeling" over the cooperation the other departments had given them. They then spoke about the closing of the building and asking that anybody who worked there or who had visited there come in to be treated with antibiotics, and to get information ...

Thank You, Gary Condit Dr. James Hirsen Aug. 27, 2001 In an atmosphere of reluctance and suspicion, Gary Condit has managed to provide the nation with a valuable service. Students with aspirations of becoming media consultants now have a textbook example of what not to do during a elevision interview. In a much-anticipated, live-to-tape interview conducted by Connie Chung on Aug. 23, the consensus seems to be that Rep. Gary Condit performed poorly indeed. Looking as though he may have sought makeup tips from Al Gore and adopted the camera techniques used by Richard Nixon in the 1960 presidential debate, ...

Condit finally speaks, but says almost nothing (Published: Friday, August 24, 2001) Gary Condit has been hiding in plain sight for nearly four months. Now, he is talking while staying silent. In his public statements yesterday -- on ABC's "PrimeTime Thursday" with Connie Chung and in a letter to his constituents -- Condit said almost nothing. He was continuously evasive in his interview with Chung, refusing to acknowledge a sexual affair with Chandra Levy, dodging many of the journalist's questions, parsing most of the queries he did answer and repeatedly falling back on scripted replies. Despite Chung's grilling, the congressman ...

The Key to Finding Chandra: Follow the Sex John LeBoutillier Thursday July 19, 2001 During Watergate, the operating mantra of the investigative journalists and the FBI and congressional probers was simple: Follow the money. Hush money, slush funds, illegal contributions, "purchased" ambassadorships – these were all the stories inside the story of the epic scandal, Watergate. The Condit case is not about money or power. It is about a missing woman. The media and investigators need an operating mantra that will unlock the case, but they are trying to avoid mentioning any connection between Condit's and Levy's sex lives and ...
