There used to be a time in the US where people would contact the authorities because they came across something that violated their common sense--not because they didn't like their neighbors burning leaves or smoking a cigar in the backyard, but because of something very fundamentally wrong. I think this came out of a sense of identity with the American nation, and a personal credo of responsibility. I am beginning to fear that character is disappearing.

Actually, what this shows, in one sense, is that two individuals can tie down a hell of a lot of assets. It also shows that despite all the "security" in place by the authorities, you're on your own. Sure, the people in Watertown and Boston complied with the orders to stay indoors, but that is because they understood that two violent terrorists were on the loose.

Now translate this to a scenario where a government is hostile to a large number of the 300 million in this country, and declares them "enemies of the state". I have a strong suspicion that under such a scenario cooperation won't be so forthcoming. Further, multiply the tie-down of assets in Boston/Watertown by several orders of magnitude. I don't think this particular instance is the imminent forcing of a Police State (however much Napolitano and Obama might like to put one in place). However, keeping aware and stamping down any attempts to expand the idea that having police and troops in the streets as an everyday occurance is prudent.
