Long-standing records were shattered as temperatures plummeted around North Central Washington on Sunday and into today. The Wenatchee Valley set two record lows for Oct. 11.. 23 at Pangborn Memorial Airport, breaking the previous low of 33 set in 1990; and 25 in Wenatchee, dipping below the low of 28 set in 1931. “It’s pretty extraordinary to break records by 10 degrees or more,” said Greg Koch, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Spokane.

Snow could be coming to town as early as this weekend. That’s right, snow. Flurries and flakes...If the snow sticks, it would be the earliest recorded measurable snowfall in Chicago. The record was set just three years ago when it snowed on Oct. 12.

It appears Arctic sea ice has bottomed out [for this year] and is now on the growth rebound. The NANSEN Arctic ROOS website shows that in terms of area, see ice appears to have turned the corner as of Sept 13th data.

The average June-August 2009 summer temperature for the contiguous United States was below average – the 34th coolest on record, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. August was also below the long-term average. The analysis is based on records dating back to 1895.

A major and historic winter storm is underway at this Wednesday morning in Argentina. Snow is falling in many parts of the country and in many areas not used to winter precipitation. In Bahia Blanca, a coastal city in the Southern part of the Buenos Aires, the snow storm is heavy and local authorities describe it as the worst snow event in 50 years. Roads are already blocked by snow and ice in the regional. TN news channel reports some areas of the Sierra de La Ventana could pick up even 3 feet of snow, unimaginable to the region.

Temperatures dropped to a record low in Prince Edward Island overnight Tuesday, with reports of frost throughout the province.Bob Robichaud, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said that to his knowledge, frost has never been reported before in July in P.E.I. “That 3.8 we got last night kind of sticks out as being lower than some of the other records for anytime in early July,” Robichaud told CBC News on Wednesday. “So we’re looking at a significant event,” he said.

In Manitoba, the frost is the worst in memory for its frequency and area covered, said Derwyn Hammond, the province's senior agronomy specialist for the Canola Council. "Certainly (it's) the worst year I've seen," said Hammond, who has worked for the Canola Council for 15 years. The Alberta canola crop is two to three weeks behind development, Pauly said, while the Canadian Wheat Board estimated on Monday that Western Canada wheat and barley crops are at least 10 days behind.

Inspite of what Al Gore said about the Arctic being ice free in five years, scientific data shows Arctic sea ice is at the highest it's been in seven years, and is now approaching the 1979-2000 mean level. Although not addressed in this article, Antarctic sea ice has been growing for the past 30 years, and is well above the 1979 - 2000 average.

The collapse of the Wilkins Ice Shelf in Antarctica has been big news this Spring. It was big news last Spring too. In fact the headlines were almost exactly the same, and the photos have been recycled from last year.
