In my half vast collection of books on various traditional trades, I have a one hundred year old 98 page hard cover book on the use and application of the framing square. The apprentice framing carpenter had to master basic algebra to function as an able carpenter. The fundamental practice of laying out a square building plot requires the application of the Pythagorean theorem.
Don’t forget the girl’s bike and that stupid looking racer’s helmet. The kindest thing I can say about him is, he’s a naif. A dangerous naif, to be sure. sd

We live a mile from I-81. It has been there since the early ‘60s and it hasn’t moved an inch in all that time. It does gain an inch or two in altitude every 10 or so years whenever NYDOT deigns to spend a buck on fly-over country. ;>) sd

Someone asked me years ago who I thought was the greatest figure of the twentieth century. My answer was hands down, Winston Churchill. And that from a Yank. Towering leader, awesome author and credible artist. Who better? Anyone? sd

If you have a product and nobody buys it, you have a dud and you failed. Either redesign your dud or go out of business. Nowhere is it written that you have a god given right to succeed. You succeed by producing something someone wants to buy. Otherwise, your enterprise dies. It is pretty clear that you are depending on someone else to bail you out if you fail. And failure is part of your past, no? You are too defensive otherwise. One sinks or one swims. Our welfare state has created too many hangers-on who think society owes them simply by existing. i repeat: grow up. sd

“Class,” this is called capitalism. If you have the bucks, you get to play. If you have a product to sell and there are buyers, you have a winner. If you don’t, you get to buy/sell something less spectacular until you reach an agreed price point. If the dogs won’t buy it, you either retool or go out of business. Business is not a zero sum game. Grow up. sd

How to explain the sounds of extended, sporadic gunfire he said, scratching his head. Peace loving folks don’t engage in assault tactics. This area is totally rural. sd
