  • Prayers needed here

I will be under the knife on Monday for cervical cancer. The whole baby-making machine is gonna be taken out and dumped. Good thing I don't need it anymore! Although doc says they got all the "cancer spot" with the biopsy they did in December, they still are doing a histerectomy to play it safe. I couldn't agree more with the decision. At 54 a womb is only a liability! Aside from my, family, friends and Rabbi's prayers, yours would certainly be appreciated! Thanks, fellow FReepers!
  • Illegals plan a new boycott

I don't think this has made the news yet. It'll be in a Spanish-language newspaper tomorrow, though. Activists in Mexico and the US are planning a new boycott for May 1. It will be targeted against US products and companies, especially Wal-Mart. On Feb 3 and 4 there will be a national conference at the Loyola Marymount Law School, in Los Angeles (for planning purposes, I believe). "Se trata de movilizar a todo México y presionar en Estados Unidos para que nos ayuden a obtener una reforma migratoria justa y lo más amplia posible”, destacó Javier Rodríguez, de la Coalición...

HAVANA - Fidel Castro temporarily relinquished his presidential powers to his brother Raul on Monday night and told Cubans that he had undergone surgery. The Cuban leader said he had suffered intestinal bleeding, apparently due to stress from recent public appearances in Argentina and Cuba, according to the letter read live on television by his secretary, Carlos Valenciaga.
  • FReep a poll on Israel(Do you think the Israeli military response inside Lebanon is justified?)

*Please read and continue to forward this message* CNN is holding a vote online to determine if people believe that Israel's actions are just or unjust. Last night, the vote was strongly in Israel's favor...this morning, the gap was closing. Tonight, the vote is swinging against Israel. Some of us share political views, some of us have different points of view. But regarding Israel, from the comfort of our homes, who are we to say that Israel was unjustified in her response? Israel, our homeland, needs our solidarity and support in this time of struggle.......not our second guessing and judgement...

  • Question on Dems (Vanity)

I have been looking around for any sort of creed of the Dem Party (something like what the GOP posts in its site)... Well, I have found nothing. What, concretely and specifically, do they believe in? What is their creed, declaration of values, beliefs, whatever? I want to make some sort of comparative chart...
  • Death of Common Sense (Vanity)

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense. Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge)....

Someone sent me a collection of photos of everyday Cuba and Cubans. They are absolute eye-openers (not that anyone here needs them) as to the poverty and misery in the island, and to the hyprocrisy of communism and socialism. I have no idea if they are copyrighted so, I do not know if I can post them... not that I know how to either. But, I can send them to anyone interested in them. They are in PowerPoint. E mail me if you're interested.
  • Welfare Pays Better Than Work, Study Finds

Welfare benefits are far more generous than commonly thought and substantially exceed the amount a recipient could earn in an entry-level job. As a result, recipients are likely to choose welfare over work, increasing long-term dependence. Those are the principal findings in "The Work vs. Welfare Trade-Off" (Policy Analysis no. 240) by Michael Tanner, director of health and welfare studies; Stephen Moore, director of fiscal policy studies; and David Hartman, CEO of Hartland Bank in Austin, Texas. The paper was released at the height of the welfare debate in Congress.

  • Expansion of California's "hate crimes" laws

SB 1234, Sen. Sheila Kuehl's (D-L.A.) expansion of California's "hate crimes" laws, passed another hurdle last week as the Assembly Appropriations Committee voted the bill to the floor. The full Assembly will vote on this measure soon. All bills must pass their second house by August 31 to survive and be sent to the governor for his signature or veto. This bill is very dangerous in that it expands laws relating to hate crimes and enhances punishment for hate crimes including civil penalties. It changes the definition of "hate crimes" including the definition of "gender." Please contact your Assembly Member...
