  • Is The Second Amendment a collective right or a personal right?

“A collective right or an individual right?” You ask this question seriously today?

Seems to me like some people responding to this post would do well to read the SCOTUS opinions from the Heller and the McDonald cases. While you’re at it, the recent opinion from the 7th Circuit, Moore v Madigan, warrants a bit of your reading time, too.

Once you do that, any doubts you have that the 2A being an INDIVIDUAL right will be put to rest.

Does anyone in Prince George's County government trouble themselves over the simple fact that this program violates basic constitutional rights?

Police generally need reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing to initiate a traffic stop. Here they have reasonable suspicion of lawful behavior.

I guess in Maryland, your constitutional rights have been determined by the government to be worth $1.00.

All STATISTS should cross him off their lists.

As for the anti-military rhetoric...has anyone noticed that the USA is broke? Cuts are inevitable and will have to happen across the board. Cuts that will include the military. We can let the government do it now voluntarily, or the economy do it later. No matter what: it will happen.

Libertarians are not extremists....they are actually centrists, positioned between the Statists and Big Government at one end and the Anarchists and No Government at the other.

“Uh, the north did not win the war at Gettysburg, they won a battle, the south would continue to fight on for almost two more years before surrendering.”

Here’s a line from the article that says almost exactly that, just in German: “Von da an ging es mit der Sezession nur noch bergab, fast zwei Jahre lang.” (”From then on things went only downhill for the Secession for almost two [more] years.”)

The article is accurate and non-controversial.

If they could read an accurate translation of this article into English, I doubt that most readers of FR....or most Americans for that matter....would find the article in question to be particularly controversial. In fact, the author demonstrates a better understanding of US Civil War history than 90% of most Americans.

The only thing that is controversial here are the distortions, whether unintentional or intentional, being put forth by @americanbychoice3.

I grew up speaking reading and writing both languages simultaneously, and have lived and studied in both the US and Germany. I will state again that the translations offered by @americanbychoice are grossly inaccurate distortions that do not accurately convey the meaning of the original German language article. I have come to expect better from the readers of this forum. I thought that such distortions were the exclusive domain of the leftist sites, but apparently not.....

    Believe what you want.

    @Americanbychoice3:

Another thing apparently beyond your comprehension: the German language. Your translation is inaccurate. Going to the original article, the word you translate at “ most important” means instead “most glorious”. And you translate “Nationalfeiertag” as “day”??? “Tag” is “day”:
“national holiday” is the correct translation.

A MUCH better translation of the opening sentence is “The 4th of July, 1863 stands as the most glorious national holiday in the history of the USA, as least among those states that during the Civil War stuck with the North.”

Your second sentence translation is just as bad: the sentence states that the northern ARMY defeated the southern ARMY, and does not state, as you seem to think, that the USA won the whole war.

Best stick with things you understand when you opine, and leave the selective deletion of inconvenient words and concepts to the editors of the NY Times.

You either understand and support the concept of libertarianism, or you are a statist, one who seeks to undermine individual freedom by subjugating it to government control. Note that this applies to conservative and liberals alike.

    Which one are you?

I don’t see the problem here.

After all, this business owner knew before he made the investment in new equipment that his business was located in perhaps the single most anti-business state in the Union. So he made his investment, and the government smacked him down. Completely predictable in advance.

Seems to me that in this world you pays yer money and you takes yer choice; no sense in whining about it when your gamble fails and you lose. The smart business man would have relocated his business before making that gamble. Maybe he has learned from his error?

This is frustrating for me. Even FREEPERS aren’t using their brains on this. I just described a 350mph commuter train, and people are saying that professionals wouldn’t ride it??? I guess FREEPERS think that professionals enjoy 2-3 hour commutes?

I find it frustrating that you all cannot seem to make the paradigm shift here. 25 mins from NYC to Hartford!!! We aren’t talking about the NY subway or the LIRR here poking along at 50 mph here...we are talking about airliner speeds that will get you to and from NYC in a small fraction of the time of current trains. Or a NYC to Boston express train that takes 45 mins. If a maglev was built along this line, the airline service between Boston and NYC would stop for lack of demand and high cost. I challenge everyone to talk to your elected officials out there and tell them that if they really insist on spending billions on rail travel, then build something that people will actually use, like a MAGLEV!

Here’s what I wrote to Mr. Suzio about this topic:

I’ll keep this simple, because you will either be interested enough to look into this, or you won’t.

The “High Speed Rail” that is being proposed will make us the world’s laughing stock. 85-115mph is only high speed in the minds of Washington bureaucrats.

If we want to spend billions on high speed rail, how about investing in an existing technology that the Chinese have already started to build as fast as they can?

See here for a video of the actual operation of the Shanghai Magnetic Levitation train, built using German technology: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-54gBLwK3s See what a train going 270 mph looks like.

Did I mention that current cruising speed of the German system is 350mph? That was NOT a typo....350 mph. The Shanghai only gets to 270 mph because the trip is only 19 miles, too short to reach full speed. Put another way: How does Bradley International Airport to downtown New Haven in 15 minutes sound?? Or Bradley to Manhattan in 30 minutes?

Also, as this train travels on an elevated rail, like the Monorail at Disney World, the concerns you have for traffic congestion and safety would be completely negated. And it could be built above the existing freight rails to allow the continued operation of wheeled trains without having to secure the new rights of way for a new rail line.

If billions must be spent, then how about spending it on quiet, safe, environmentally friendly maglev trains that represent a true advance for the country, and not just a step back into technology of the mid 20th Century? Heaven knows that the Chinese aren’t making that mistake........

Best of luck in your run.

BTW, this is the election for Senate. It is called a “primary”, but Alaska runs 2:1 Republican during elections, and that is if the Rats are having a good day. That makes this primary the de facto election for the office of Senator.

Those last few precincts that gave her those votes are probably isolated villages with populations almost entirely of Alaska Natives. Since the people in those villages spend much of their time slopping at the trough of public money, and since The Murk has been their #1 slopmaster (delivering up those tasty federal pork checks by the bushel load to all the hungry little voters there) since Stevens lost his election, they will no doubt turn in a greater number of votes in her favor.

It won’t be enough. The absentee ballots will need to be counted, but it seems unlikely that she will get enough votes from them to overcome the difference.....she would need to win 70% of the votes or so....ain’t gonna happen.
