Correct but the intent is that it become “defacto policy” via senior leadership adopting the PC speak...

    Same effect.

In fact I think the DHS and NCTC documents are disengenous in that regard...the DHS memo is promulgated by the Civil Liberties division [the multicultural police].

Apparently the government is schizophrenic when it comes to a clear understanding of who our enemy is in the war on terror and how it operates in America.

At some point someone has to take charge of this war and address that fundamental question first otherwise we have a lot of tires spinning in the mud going nowhere while our domestic security is compromised and even our government war activities infiltrated by the very same threat.

Former senior DIA official determines facts and evidence in case demonstrate Muslim Brotherhood is a "latent insurgency" in America now, presents a clear and present "threat to public safety" and senior US government officials now must demostrate"strategic comprehension of the threat" and "must take steps to mitigate and defeat it."

    This is a must read.

This is must reading, academic but informative...the author takes apart the work for what it is, a jihad treatise that more people need to digest and understand for its implications...The Pakistani general makes clear that the Quran is a warfighting document.

Excellent question with some very subtle implications about threatening the entire proliferating network as a group if a rogue state transfer nukes to terrorists and there is a resultant WMD event in the US...the idea is that the risks of the proliferators become shared as is their cooperation in the network, and that might put the rogues states at odds with one another.... Rummy's answer on video demonstrated some interest in the concept while the transcript shows he is skeptical about deterring Korea and Iran absent strong international will.

Hammers the Hamdan Decision. If in a hurry read the conclusions which are fairly bold and contentious to overide the Court's opinion legislatively, some FREEPERS may dissent. It explains the purpose of the Geneva Conventions, provides a moral rational for dealing with detainees, harshly if needed and recommends several legislative solutions to the Supreme Court's decision...illuminating read that cut's through the media, liberal republcian fog.

An important read and statement of the strategic predicament America is in. On the one hand, the Administration says we are at war, politicians head-nod and say we are at war, most Americans "support the troops"...and of course we are in a war [unless you listen to Air America everyday]. But the country cannot be said to be united, the politicians spend money like its peacetime, the author is right...we say one thing and do another like "business as usual." The defense budget is too small, the Army is too small and the Clinton era defense cuts and drawdowns helped to put us here.

I support the war and agree the Army should be expanded and transformed. I doubt there will be a draft but America at war should be prepared to support one, and here again we are not. Head-nod we are at war, oh, but no draft! don't extend war time service to those who would not assume the burden anyway. I suppose that's the difference between war in theory and real war.

  • DODDS-Europe drops 'American' from official school names

Traditionally host nation nationals paying tuition and certain USG civilian employees were allowed into the schools on a space available basis.

If we are keeping these schools open while US forces drawdown, and then allow host nation civilians to fill the open classroom seats at taxpayer expense then all the more reason TO KEEP "American" in the school name.

I predict this will be a talkradio and Fox News item by next week where it will come under poltical Congressional scrutiny and be reversed... or some Congressman will pass the next MILCON bill with a rider saying "American" stays in the DoDDS schools name.

I promise you, once the veterans community catches on, of which I am one, and now I can tell you about 100 already others know about it, and several of them have their own distro lists you will witness the power of the internet once again.

    Note the multicultural drivel here:

“I think that is acceptable. More people of different heritages might feel more welcome now, not like they have to feel like they’re just American,” said the seventh-grader, who has a mixed heritage of Japanese, Puerto Rican, black and white."

My kids have been in DoDDs schools around the world and this attitude not only is imbecelic it fails reflect pride and basic education of the contributions of America ...like democracy and freedoms...such that one would not be ashamed to refer to it. No, we would rather be humble and wimpering and shy and shameful about identifying ourselves as an American school.

All of the Armed Forces community services and installation web sites have the names of the schools and the links to their web sites readily assessible. This is a nonsense excuse.

I would tell DoDDS if they want to drop A"merican School" from their name then they can drop my tax dollars from subsidizing it...

Write your Congressman; this DoDDS administrator is reeking of PC ideology and I won't put up with it.

  • Why We Can’t Deter Iran (because we aren’t)

The point of the article as I read it is not Iran directly attacking the US but about proliferating states like China Pakistan Iran and North Korea and the US being attacked on some non-attribution basis by terrorists Hezbollah al Qaida, whoever, its unimportant...etc.

So this is not about a trade-off between pre-emption and being attacked overtly but how to preempt proliferation and covert attacks...when we probably or may not know what is going on beforehand.

I think this is the point of the article; how to adapt our deterrence strategy to countries like Iran having nukes with highly capable proxies and terrorists in the world.

The implication is that if an event happens, the USD may respond anyway against Iran North Korea China and lot of other people irrespective of what we know...that's why I like the argument...if it scares the crap out of these losers maybe they will go around and spend resources and prevent an attack on the US vice our having to do the lifting alone...

I think Iran would like to see the US destroyed but they risk being destroyed if a nuclear event occurs here under this strategy and that may or may not give us or force the cooperation and security we want.

Iran is not safe having nukes under this strategy.

I don't think the author took a position on military action but argued absent that action and Iran acquiring nukes current US nuclear deterrent strategy is no good...I think you both agree in the main.

The current plan is no good that's for sure.

Not sure where Bush is on this whether he will use military action or not...

Argument that without an ironclad diplomatic solution [doubtful] and absent military action, the US must change its nuclear deterrence strategy in a world with rogue states acquiring nuclear weapons and terrorist actors. Good points. Note the comments on China and Russia.

Well I guess the greatest national security 'expert' in congress, Generalisimo Congressman Murtha, is beginning to get traction on this ignoramus idea...it makes no sense for our national objectives in Iraq; consolidating a non-aggressive and non-terror sponsoring Iraq; no sense in terms of force readiness; command and control, or capabilities, or posturing or infrastructure; or for established military relationships, intelligence, responsiveness...this is wedge issue politics masqerading as security policy an anyone who wants to vote for that...well I won't say, but it is further proof how inebriated the McGovernite party is for defending America.

I say the 'defeatacrats' are an assymetric threat to America, just behind al Qaida,

    ...stupidity is an assymetry.

It is legal...take a course on intelligence oversight.

These lawyer talking heads don't know what they are talking about, don't understand or 'accept' the President's authorities; they don't want to acknowledge that the President retains war powers authorities and is the lead for foreign intelligence.

...NO PRESIDENT has accepted the "War Powers Act" as binding; Congressional FISA legislation is comformed with for reasonableness reasons-- it does not impede national security and protects rights, but the President is not bound by Congress on that either...for those who keep whining about FISA-- the FISA court of review admitted the President's "inherent" authorities to conduct "warrantless searches;" it is done for foreign intelligence not for personal or political gain and Congress has been informed...

Do not forget Article 1 Section 9 in the Constitution...Bush can suspend habeas corpus and throw the NYT editorial staff and journalists in jail for violating national secrets and if he can do that he can certainly use NSA for domestic surveillance tied to foreign intelligence.

...that also means he can keep those little 'sh..heads' in GITMO as long as wants irrespective of what any court says if he needs to play that card...
