SALISBURY — Police Chief Jerry Stokes on Tuesday delivered a brief statement about an incident involving a K-9 and a police officer and didn’t take any questions from reporters. Stokes said the video involved a “K-9 training” and that the officer involved has been “administratively separated” from the K-9. The original video was published by Charlotte TV station FOX 46 and then removed from its website. A remnant of the article visible through Google search says an officer was shown hitting and pulling the dog up by the leash. Stokes said the incident is being investigated by an outside agency...
  • Flashback: Rudy Giuliani Is Not Practicing Law, And Billing Him As Trump’s Attorney Degrades The Value Of A Law License

Rudy Giuliani is an exaggerated cartoon metaphor for millennials’ slow awaking about the fallibility and tragic decline of their parents. He graduated from law school in 1968, went on to serve as a federal prosecutor, and eventually became mayor of New York. When 9/11 happened, we were all scared and confused, and Rudy stood up there and gave us some confidence in the future. He looked like a leader. And then, as his star faded, there came a decade of irrelevance. His former prowess battered, but his pride intact, he reached for the spotlight with one final, self-destructive act: enthralling...

  • Siri Corrects Anyone Trying to Call Caitlyn Jenner "Bruce"

Siri has been known to have quite the sassy remarks when asked questions she doesn't like - such as zero divided by zero - but she can also be quite informative about nuanced issues when she wants to be. Anyone looking to call Caitlyn Jenner by her former name Bruce, will be immediately corrected by Siri. For example, asking "How tall is Bruce Jenner" will get you the straightforward response of "Caitlyn Jenner is 6'2 tall." The question "What gender is Bruce Jenner?" prompts "The answer is female."

JJ Lane, who was eliminated by Kaitlyn Bristowe earlier this season on “The Bachelorette,” was beaten up by a group of unidentified men on Saturday following the taping of the “Men Tell All” special in Los Angeles. The brutal attack left Lane with two black eyes and in the hospital. It’s unclear who the men were or what their motive was, but they had apparently been waiting outside the cast and crew party after the special’s taping. Some outlet are saying the perpetrators were members of a gang, but Gossip Cop has yet to confirm. We’re told Lane, a former...

When I was growing up, my father owned a small business. And when I say small, I mean small: It was my father and an occasional day laborer. My mother, brothers, and I would help do the silkscreen printing on the drapery fabrics he sold. We were an all-hands-on-deck operation, guided by my father’s belief that if you worked hard and did what you were supposed to do, opportunities would be there for you. Despite generations of progress on so many other fronts, it’s still too hard to get a business started today. Hard work is no longer enough to...

The "narrative" of Ferguson, Missouri changed somewhat today. But, amid the confusion, the blundering stupidity of the city's police department remains consistent. This morning the Police Chief, Thomas Jackson, released security-camera shots of the late Michael Brown apparently stealing a five-dollar box of cigarillos from a convenience store. So the 18-year old shot dead by Chief Jackson's officer was no longer a "gentle giant" en route to college but just another crappy third-rate violent teen n'er-do-well. {SNIP} It's important, when something goes wrong, to be clear about what it is that's at issue. Talking up Michael Brown as this season's...
  • New ACLU report takes a snapshot of police militarization in the United States

The American Civil Liberties Union has released the results of its year-long study of police militarization. {SNIP}But we’ve already seen cases in which the mere factor that the resident of a home was a legal gun owner — in some cases by virtue of the fact that the owner had obtained some sort of state license — was used as an excuse to execute a full-on SWAT raid to serve a warrant for an otherwise nonviolent crime. Of the SWAT raids the ACLU studied in which police cited the possibility of finding a weapon in the home, they actually found...

SALISBURY — A 92-year-old retired minister has filed a civil complaint against a Salisbury Police officer claiming the officer used unreasonable force in tackling him and breaking two bones. The Rev. J.W. Loy Jr., who had been a resident at the Salisbury Gardens assisted-living facility at the time, was hospitalized for four days after the April 4, 2013, incident. “This isn’t about anybody but my daddy and a police officer who stepped over the line,” said Loy’s daughter, Shari Keller. Filed Feb. 26 in Rowan County Superior Court, Loy’s suit names Police Officer Chris Hamm and the city of Salisbury...

Conn. Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a news conference on Wednesday afternoon that repairs could take "as long as three weeks or more." In the meantime, limited service will be offered via diesel train to about 30 percent of the New Haven Line's daily ridership.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office says it will start requiring mental health background checks for anyone applying to buy a handgun. The application already asks whether the person seeking the handgun permit has ever been committed to a mental institution. But until now, the Sheriff’s Office had never verified the answer. Beginning Monday, handgun permit applicants will have to give permission for the Rowan County Clerk of Superior Court to release mental health records to the Sheriff’s Office.“It’s been an honor system, and we are just going to do a little more checking,” Sheriff Kevin Auten said. The inquiry includes...
