As for Google, it is great, if you know how to judge sources. I am a librarian, and will admit I did not find that article. I had plugged into Google a shorter portion of that quote and came up with other articles that were NOT reliable. The one sent to me seemed to be legit, and it claimed that Chamberlain spoke those words in 1913, so that fit in with a 1914 death.

Google will not replace professional librarians, and those who say it will are probably folks who never have to rely on the research assistance of academic librarians. That said, Google is GREAT. Wish I had bought some stock at the bottom!

Thanks very much. It seems like the documentation supports that Chamberlain SAID he got a letter. The research does not need to be airtight, otherwise we'd go over to Bowdoin College of the JC Museum in Brusnswick,Maine, and ask some archivist if they have the original letter in his files.

I told my son that even though remembering things poorly is a human trait, and many "stories" are indeed myths, especially when remembered years later of events that happened in the hell and blood of battle, that Chamberlain was known as a man of great Christian integrity. Therefore, it would seem out of character for him to have lied about the whole letter, even if he cited it wrong.

Chamberlain's grave was recently done over by a National Guard contingent: you can search the Times Record in Brunswick for the online story.

For me, (getting back to Gettysburg) as one who believes in the Sovereign Providence of God, this story is very poignant. Here was a soldier from Alabama who more than likely prayed to the same Lord as Chamberlain, and he has the General in his sites TWICE-- but some strange force will not allow him to pull the trigger!!!! The Holy Spirit moves upon whom He will and we/they are not even aware of it.

Of course, the secularist argues that this is poppycock, and that people only talk about Providence when things go well for them. Like, what about the bullets that hit their mark, and blew fresh brains into the cold air? To be consisitent, the Christian has to say that was also somehow part of God's purpose, which we may or may not find out about in Glory...

The Throne of David

“We have adapted our message to the reflect the reality of”—

“Isn’t it a fact you screwed the public?”

“That’s absurd, we were not aware that our pictures
were doctored, or that our reporters had diplomas
in fiction. Don’t shoot the messanger, that’s an old tr”—

“Speaking of tricks, isn’t it true that you lied
with a straight face, showed us the distraught face
of the enemy teddy bears tossed on the rubble?”

“Photography is artistry! How dare you”—

“A Pulitzer is not an Emmy, or hadn’t you heard?
And why do your editors salivate like admen,
your reporters, like screenwriters and madmen?”

“Look here, we’re the Press, we do the asking around here!”

“Then why are you so offended by questions?”

Look’n For the End of Time

Looking for the end of time’s
a goddamn crime;
Preachers on the TV spitt’n
goddamn slime.

“Christ knows we’ll always have the poor”
to kick around the church-yard door;
But when it comes to Holy War
The Saints go marching out like Thor

Each time we hear the sound of bombs
the Saints break out in Holy Pslams;
searching in books and reading palms
usurp the place of giving alms.

The people of the Middle East
are God’s own fodder;
When you see that train a com’n
be sure to holler!

“Praise the Lord and pass the bullets”—
what a bucket of holy bullshit.
“The time of Christ is drawing near”—
just like it was each time before.

According to “God’s Prophetic Clock,”
the Jews are in for quite a shock;
and Muslims? They ain’t got a prayer
cause even God Himself don’t care.

And there upon the sacred screen
the women bleed and children scream;
“Hell no I can’t spare a dime,
I’m look’n for the end of Time!”

It's been a long while since I've visited the Lair, But I came across a FANTASTIC Pro-Denmark/Pro Free Speech Poetry Contest that I think the scribes here might want to support.

The contest also has a category for cartoons and the whole idea is to speak up on behalf of free speech vs. the attempts by Islamic activists to impose self censorhsip on our media and "hate laws" to silence criticism of Islam.

O how we American take pride in our Laws!--
while Justice is trampled in the streets.

We may not know all the facts, but this case surely raises enough questions that it must be heard -- just as the one dissenting judge in Atlanta said in his opinion. If Terri goes to her grave this week or next (even though it be a reward) with the facts in her case left ungathered, then her example will stand as indictment against us. She is voiceless now, but if she could speak, might this not be her indictment?
