WASHINGTON (AP) — Fifteen phony products — including a gasoline-powered alarm clock — won the Energy Star label in a test of the program's vulnerability to fraud. A report released Friday says government investigators tried to pass off 20 fake products as energy efficient, and only two were rejected. Three others didn't get a response. The General Accountability Office concludes the program is susceptible to fraud and abuse. The program run by the Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency is supposed to identify energy-efficient products to help consumers. A Michigan man who was aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 says he witnessed Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab trying to board the plane in Amsterdam without a passport. Kurt Haskell of Newport, Mich., who posted an earlier comment about his experience, talked exclusively with MLive.com and confirmed he was on the flight by sending a picture of his boarding pass. DETROIT - An analysis by The Detroit Free Press has found that most of the federal stimulus funding that's reached Michigan has created few private-sector jobs. The Free Press examined more than 1,800 awards to agencies, departments, municipalities and firms in Michigan under the stimulus act. It found that the biggest impact was spurring or protecting public-sector or summer jobs-not private-sector jobs. Of the 22,513 stimulus jobs reported in Michigan, 13,555 were tied to state money for education, doled out to local school districts. TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) - Hundreds opposed to President Barack Obama's proposed health care initiatives gathered outside Rep. Gary Peters' office in Troy Monday to voice their displeasure and concern. A pair of local child care workers are suing the state over their mandatory inclusion into a union. Following a December 2008 notification letter from the state, child care workers began paying union dues to the Child Care Providers Together Michigan, an arm under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and United Auto Workers, because they receive subsidy checks from the Michigan Department of Human Services for caring for children of low income families. Computerworld - A company providing online payment-processing services for U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) is back online after being disrupted by a distributed denial-of-service attack over the weekend. The attack on Piryx began Friday afternoon and lasted into the early hours of Saturday morning, temporarily disrupting a Wilson fundraising effort that was under way at that time, Piryx CEO Tom Serres said. It also knocked out services for about 150 other Piryx clients, he said. Piryx is a nonpartisan Austin-based start-up that provides services to help political candidates and nonprofits manage online campaigns and fundraising.
