  • MIT Makes Titanium Alloys Tougher and More Flexible Than Ever

Researchers at MIT have developed a new approach for creating titanium alloys that surpass traditional trade-offs between strength and ductility. By adjusting chemical composition, lattice structure, and processing techniques, they’ve created materials with enhanced mechanical properties. This innovation could be used to produce metals with exceptional combinations of strength and ductility, for aerospace and other applications. Titanium alloys are essential structural materials for a wide variety of applications, from aerospace and energy infrastructure to biomedical equipment. But like most metals, optimizing their properties tends to involve a tradeoff between two key characteristics: strength and ductility. Stronger materials tend to be...
  • Researchers travel back in time for a cheaper hydrogen storage solution

While hydrogen's high energy per mass makes it an excellent fuel, it's awfully hard and expensive to store long-term. That could change, thanks to the work of researchers at Switzerland's ETH Zurich. They've worked out a way to store hydrogen in ordinary steel-walled containers for months without losing it into the atmosphere – using iron. The research team led by Wendelin Stark, Professor of Functional Materials at ETH Zurich, hit upon this method by drawing from the steam-iron process of producing hydrogen, first invented in 1784. The group's storage solution is especially suitable in places like Switzerland, where solar power...

Brenmiller Energy’s boxes of hot rocks are being deployed to turn electricity into steam heat, boost campus heat-and-power systems, and make power plants more efficient. Doron Brenmiller, co-founder of Brenmiller Energy, knows all about the useful things hot rocks can do. Over the past 12 years, the Israel-based manufacturer of thermal energy storage systems has evolved from producing heat batteries for a specific purpose — solar-thermal power plants — to heat batteries for a much wider range of applications. Brenmiller Energy’s bGen systems, which use crushed rock as an energy-storage medium, are now being deployed to turn cheap electricity into...

Bacteria can synthesize metal nanoparticles as a detox method, converting metal atoms into nanoparticles to protect themselves from poisoning. Researchers have proposed a method using bacteria to extract rare metals essential for the development of green technology. A team named The Horsfall Group at the University of Edinburgh aims to use microorganisms to extract lithium, cobalt, manganese, and other minerals from old batteries and discarded electronic equipment. Several bacteria are able to decrease metal cations and generate precipitates of zero-valence, pure metals as a survival strategy against dangerous concentrations of metal cations.

My father is in the hospital and won't be coming home, although he's still pretty strong. Stairs are a risk to him now, so we are trying to get him homed in a reasonably nice place. My naïve and gullible sister, haha, allowed a druggie to stay in her house ostensibly to get help and get off the street. He got a hold of my dad's debit and credit cards and he passed a couple of fraudulent cheques for a total of $8,000 that we can offhand calculate. It may be higher when everything is audited. So my question is,...

The COVID-19 pandemic is proving to be a powerful driver of change. It is spurring biodigital innovations such as nearly real-time biosurveillance of virus spread and mutations; virus tracking via smartphone; and messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine development at unprecedented speed. Biodigital convergence, the merging of biological systems and digital technologies, is challenging the way we understand ourselves and the world in which we live.

Hypothetical situation, if a business fires you or lays you off, but they realized after that you had knowledge about the business, like a combination to a safety that nobody else had, can they legally make you give it up to them?

The suggestion that boxing could be missing from the 2028 Los Angeles Games is one of those historic moments for both sport and the Olympic Games. One of the founding sports of the modern Olympics, boxing has been a core component of every Reinstatement Games since 1904. It appeared in St Louis alongside other events like wrestling, but turbulence regarding governance, ethics, and sports integrity has it teetering. The following article digs into this history, why it led to an International Olympic Committee (IOC) decision, and what that means more widely in boxing within the Olympic movement.
  • What is the origin of the side grip, or gangsta grip?

It is my understanding that the origin is military. As a tactic to get a quick shot that is reasonably accurate but you are giving up points in accuracy for expediency reasons. The best my internet searching has found is that it was popularized by Hollywood, then the gang culture, but there is no real and definitive origin given It's origin is not gang, because there have been movies in the 1960's that made use of the side grip when firing off a revolver or semi-automatic pistols. It may not have been taught as an approved military tactic, but lots...

A new study suggests that the first of seven key pyramids in Egypt, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, was built using a hydraulic lift. Dated to about 4,500 years ago, this would move up the introduction of major hydraulic systems from previous beliefs. The landscape, waterways, and interior architecture of the pyramid all point to the hydraulic system.
