And I’d like to say something here that might be considered off topic, but it’s a thought I’ve had before and it’s occurring to me again now.

It involves paganism I suppose, rather than religion, but perhaps some will see the relevance (if there is any!)

Isn’t it interesting how pagans would want to get a lock of a person’s hair, or some other small body remnant in order to cast a spell on that person. For how many centuries was this considered just “superstition” by more educated (for want of a better word) people.

And yet, and yet, weren’t those old witch doctors exactly right? Now that we know (by watching CSI if nothing else) that your entire individual physical profile is present even in a lock of hair?

I thought of this a while ago and I still find it pretty mind boggling.

How did this guy go from being a rookie to retired in 5 years?

“negro” is the word for black in spanish. They don’t have another word for it.

Here’s another question, when did “oriental” become a bad word and why is everyone an “Asian” now.

Because to me there are differences between people I would call “Orientals” such as Chinese people, Japanese people, Korean people, etc. and those I would call “Asian” such as Indians, Pakistanis, etc.

And not just differences of appearance, there are great language and cultural differences.

But I guess as long as I don’t think white people s*ck, I’m a racist!

And now you get stupidities like broadcasters referring to black people from Africa as “african-americans”.

I’ll ask hubby if he remembers that.

There is nothing wrong with the word Negro. When, how & why it became considered a slur is something I can never grasp.

Clearly there were many big mistakes made in the late 20th century. Vatican Council II was one of them.

It would be fitting and proper if the RC Church took a lead in finding the way back.

Agreed, vaccination is one of the greatest advances in all human history.

Truly our scientific knowledge is a gift from God.

Nobody can ever calculate how many lives have been spared by vaccination alone.

It seems there are people, on the Left and on the Right too, who would like to go “back to nature” and live as we did hundreds of years ago.

I think these people have no sense of history and no idea how “poor, nasty, brutal and short” life was in those days.

Hobbes really summed it up well, and his choice of the word “nasty” is particularly to be admired.

We’ve got some problems in the world today, and many people are still living in a way too nasty way.

But face it, the poorest of the poor in the western world are living lives that would have been envied by the greatest kings and queens of days gone by.

Envy may be too weak a word, they’d be astounded.

Not the least of these advance is that parents no longer have to resign themselves to burying some/many/all of their children.

I suggest a close watching of Monty Python’s “Holy Grail” to get a sense of how things really were in the good old days. And remember to bear in mind that that life style was the norm for EVERYONE for thousands and thousands of years.
