I am currently rereading “A Crack in the Edge of the Earth: The Great California Earthquake of 1906” by Imon Winchester. The early chapters talk about a great many other earthquakes that had happened in the month or so leading up to that April 18. (whoa, 100 year anniversary tomorrow!)
This was published in the early 1970’s, I have the actual paperback. I could never have conceived of two popes, but there it is.
From the first page:
“Civil wars rage in Western Europe. The Church is perse-
cuted; the Pope leaves Rome and dies in exile; an anti-pope is
installed in Rome; the Catholic Church is split, leaderless and
completely disorganized. Communism is victorious. The Mo-
hammedans invade Europe and commit innumerable atroci-
ties. “
Sounds like long before this particular range formed, once upon a time a different range formed from continental collisions that created those old rocks. The current orogeny exposed those older rocks.
That 90+ year old German guy being sent to prison for being a Nazi camp guard? What’s the problem? It’s in the past! Bill Cosby’s penchant for drugging his dates? In the past!
