Some families are really struggling & we need to get some money to them. Unfortunately we've already spent a lot of money & we're way into the red ink on this. So we need to cut costs. Well-to-do households that are simply going to bank the money don't need it. The only question here should be, "How do we distinguish those who need the money from those who don't?"

The author proposed a very arbitrary line of $50,000 but this is way too simplistic. Anybody making over $50K up to a limit of $100K should also qualify, if they can show some kind of substantial financial hardship in the past year, such as the breadwinner losing his job, or getting his hours cut.

This is the way to get money to families who really need it bad & at the same time, not bankrupting the US government. We are already standing at $28 trillion in debt & I don't want to make it $29 trillion today.

I wouldn't be getting a check either way. Your "give it to everybody" plan would give me a check but it would drive America deeper into debt. I don't want that & I'm prepared to make this small sacrifice. I hope you are too, Vinnie. Have a great weekend.

Both of you are correct. For centuries, influential and wealthy Catholic families in Europe and the Western Hemisphere sent their homosexual sons to the seminary. Donations flowed into church coffers, and their presence was a carefully guarded secret. The homosexual priests became a fairly powerful minority and they protected, and continue to protect their own. Any homosexual priest who got into trouble was assigned to different duties, or relocated to another diocese. Victims and their families were bullied into silence.

In most cases, the records do exist. A lot depends on which country we're talking about. Any country that has had a civil war, or has otherwise become a theater of war, has had some destruction of records.

If records do exist, it's reasonable to rely on them if certified copies are provided by a government agency. No country is immune to the ravages of war. Refugees from Croatia, which is a European Christian country, during the wars and ethnic cleansing of the 1990s sometimes had this problem: birth certificates and marriage licenses and certificates destroyed when a local government office was bombed or burned. It's not limited to Third World countries.
