There’s no real point to colonizing the moon or Mars, when we have so much unused space on planet Earth. We’ve got an entire empty continent on Earth that is much more hospitable than the Moon or Mars, and would cost astronomically less to colonize than either of those places. We’d also eliminate the two biggest hurdles to colonization (lack of water & oxygen), and any resources we harvest there would cost basically nothing to ship back to “civilization” compared to shipping from another planet.

So, until I see Antarctica being colonized, I have no interest in any of my money being spent on these fool’s errands.

I watched a BBC show called “Meet the Natives”, where they took stone-age tribesmen from a Pacific island, and brought them to stay with families in England, with all the modern conveniences. These tribesmen had a custom where, after the evening meal, all the men would gather and chew some local stimulant plant and shoot the breeze all night long. They couldn’t understand how a similar custom wasn’t observed by the people they stayed with. That is, until they were introduced to a local pub, which they recognized as the British version of their tribal custom.

Seems to me that standing around on the street corner at night is the ghetto version of this “tribal meeting”.

Yeah, I don’t think the producers have any intention of killing him off anytime soon. I think Carol is probably a goner though, she doesn’t seem to serve any purpose on the show that anyone is interested in.

Yeah, she was particularly annoying, especially last season when they tried to give her a character arc and spent way too much time on her little Woodbury empowerment journey.

Looks like they are following the “Lost” playbook. Kill off any characters that are unpopular, you run out of ideas for, or simply don’t want to pay the actor’s salary demands, then introduce fresh characters regularly.

At least they have been killing off some characters I hated, like Lori, whereas Lost kept the useless Kate around until the end just to fuel love triangles.

I don’t know, I’m skeptical about some of those techniques, especially the mass marketed ones. Yes, those are prime targets to disable someone, but they are also areas of the body where you have the strongest instinctual reflexes to defend, because they are so vulnerable. Even before your brain realizes it’s in a fight, your reflexes cause your head to drop to protect the throat and make it harder to get at the eyes. The groin’s a pretty good target of opportunity though.

It could mean something like that, sure. It could also mean that it’s just our perception of time that is “fuzzy”. Think about a motion picture. It’s not a fluid moving image, but really just a series of static images displayed in sequence. Our brain takes that input and creates a fluid perception.

So, maybe time is quantized, and our brain just creates a fluid perception for us, which would necessarily be an imperfect approximation, since our brain would have to interpolate some things.

I’ve got a little theory about time myself, and in my theory, our perception of time is not actually limited to a single “instant” at a time, like it appears to us. I think we really perceive a very thin “slice” of time, including not just the present moment, but perhaps a tiny bit of the past, and a tiny bit of the future. Then, our brain probably filters out the “bookends” as irrelevant data. I derived this idea purely from common sense observations about relativity and time dilation.

You can argue whatever you want, but no conservative candidates lost the election, because there were none on either party’s ticket in the general. Romney lost the election.

It’s useless to try to use this to predict anything. However, if their observations are correct, there are interesting ramifications for understanding things like human intuition. Or beating Las Vegas slot machines :)

This really isn’t about predicting anything specific about the future. The thesis is that human consciousness, alone, or in aggregate, can actually change probabilities, and they seem to have good data to back that up.

So, his machine can “sense” when those probabilities are being strongly affected by our consciousnesses, and that seems to be an indicator that a big event is happening or about to happening. However, there’s no way his machine can tell him what that event is, so he can’t actually see the future.

She probably should have asked Jesus to cut a commercial for her. Those always work better than print endorsements.

I know someone who was audited for being a prominent donor to a Republican gubernatorial candidate, and I’m sure there are tons of FReepers who also were targeted or know people who were. What we’ve heard about this week is just the tip of the iceberg.
