New York officials say they have busted a multi-million dollar cigarette smuggling ring. Officials allege that three of the 16 Palestinian immigrants charged had links to known terrorists. The state's attorney general said investigators had recovered only "a fraction" of the proceeds from sales of more than a million untaxed cartons. The amount of money involved remains unclear, but records show the suspects deposited at least $55m (£36m). The scheme cost the state an estimated $80m in tax revenue, said officials in a press conference on Thursday. The alleged ringleaders, brothers Basel and Samir Ramadan, were arrested on Wednesday in...

On Thursday night a 23-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested at the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales after officers say they found four pounds of heroin in her bra. The combined...

The appearance promoted an upcoming episode featuring Obama in which she thanks military families for their sacrifices. On the show, star Miranda Cosgrove plays the daughter of an Air Force colonel deployed overseas....

When looking at the biggest draft mistakes of the 2000s, there comes a line of demarcation that starts around 2007 - there are certain players who just don't get it right away in the NFL, and they should be given time as such. That's why 2007 is our cutoff point for draft year, though there are players we suspect will be on this list very soon...

Each of the four claims asks $25,000 in punitive damages and $7,500 in compensation for civil rights violations. In Moscow, a sculpture of a pickle will commemorate one of Russia’s beloved snacks. 38 designs were judged by Muscovites in a popular vote for the most original concept. Ten finalists were selected for the second round, after which the winner will be cast in bronze. The contest is organized by the Knyazev production center which wants to unveil the statue as “a monument to a truly Russian snack”. Constructing random monuments is all the rage in Russia. After decades of the obligatory statues of Lenin and Stalin on every town’s main square, people are acquiring a taste for sculptures...

SEATTLE - By this time next month, disturbing the peace in Seattle may draw more police attention that smoking pot. As it should be, argue backers of Initiative 75. Lower than petty theft, public drunkenness and drunken driving. Lower than traffic violations and lower than being a public nuisance. The measure's endorsers include the King County Bar Association, The League of Women Voters, the King County Democrats and several Seattle City Council members. "I...

The Chronicle is now complaining about how the feds are enforcing the marijuana laws in the wake of a pot bust in Santa Cruz. Many readers may recall when the Chron was ridiculing Prop. 187, the initiative passed by the voters, that would have prohibited all sorts of governmental assistance to illegal aliens. The Chron came out both with a series of editiorials and stories slanted to show that this was not only a cruel inititiave but that it flew in the face of federal laws. Of course no federal laws controlled the state's willingness to dispense its dollars to...
