A fashion designer may have found the answer to gun violence — stylish clothing for men and women that is completely bulletproof. God help us. Designer Miguel Caballero first developed his line in his native Colombia, where wealthy clients needed protection from Medellin drug cartel hit men, but didn't like the bulky look of bulletproof vests. After all, if you must run away from a shooter, why not do it in couture? … Celebrities were the first to wear his impermeable apparel. Caballero made Sean (Diddy) Combs a bulletproof white dinner jacket, tunics for the Wu Tang Clan and a...

This is bullet-proof human skin - made from spider silk and goat milk. Yes, really. Jalila Essaidi is testing the limits of human endurance, and it starts by having to milk spider-goats. Spider goats are otherwise innocent-looking goats that have been genetically engineered to produce milk packed with the protein made in spider's silk. (There is no definitive proof that this also gives them a propensity to skitter up walls or hide out in your sock drawer, but I think it does.) Once the goats are milked, Essaidi spins the protein into fiber that is ten times stronger than steel,...

John Bourque believes he's onto something big. Really big. Now he just has to convince the rest of the world. The carpenter-turned-inventor says his Tucson company's patented nano- technology can turn aluminum into a nearly impenetrable, lightweight armor for bodies and vehicles. The technology - with the sci-fi name of Kryron - also can create ultra-conductive and corrosion-resistant wire and electrical components, or help form tough metal plating on plastics and other non-metals, says Bourque, founder and CEO of Bourque Industries Inc. But it's one thing to have a great idea; it's quite another to bring it successfully to market....

WASHINGTON - Fox News host Glenn Beck wore a bulletproof vest at his weekend rally, where he claimed "many, many miracles" had occurred - including a flyover of geese."I'm absolutely wearing a bulletproof vest," Beck said he told Alveda King, the niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., before the "Restore Honor" event at the Lincoln Memorial. He and other speakers risked their lives but "she decided not to wear it," Beck said of Alveda King, and now "she is a marked woman for standing on that step with me."

BUCKHORN, Mo. (Nov. 7, 2009) — A Halloween alternative party at Grace Covenant Church of Buckhorn, near Fort Leonard Wood, has raised $2,300 for bullet-resistant vests and other equipment in the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff J.B. King, who is a Southern Baptist, said he and his deputies greatly appreciate the help from the independent charismatic church. “It’s been a godsend,” King said. “During the past four years, this has amounted to a very healthy amount of money. We placed this donation into our equipment fund and it has helped us buy all kinds of equipment for our vehicles; for...

Sikh policemen to get bulletproof turbans so they can join firearms units By DAILY MAIL REPORTER 07th May 2009 A Sikh police officer wears a traditional turban - which is not bulletproof Police are trying to develop bullet-proof turbans for Sikh officers to wear instead of helmets. The headwear would allow those who insist on always wearing turbans to join gun or riot squads for the first time. Scientists are investigating whether bullet-proof Kevlar could be used for the 15ft strip of cloth a turban requires. Researchers are trying to make a bulletproof turban that would allow Sikhs in British police to join firearms units. As Sikhs aren't allowed to wear any protective headgear over the turban so the UK prohibits them from becoming firearms officer. But now, scientists are developing the sturdy turbans made from Kevlar-like material to act as a shield, British newspapers reported on Thursday. Inspector Gian Singh Chahal, from Kent Police and vice-chairman of the British Police Sikh Association, said on Thursday: "Sikh officers have been prohibited from becoming firearms officers because our religion does not allow us to remove the turban....

If Barack Obama is elected into office as the 44th president of the United States on Nov. 4 and voters, in tandem, give the Democrats 60 seats in the Senate and give them a solid majority in the House. What happens after Inauguration Day? Single-party rule is inherently totalitarian whether the people consent to it or not. In most cases, one-party states rise out of authoritarian regimes, including former monarchies, or socialist revolutions. There are currently seven - China, Cuba, Eritrea, Laos, Vietnam, Syria, Korea. The United States would become the eighth. Single-party rule is something to fear in and...

According to the Telegraph, female cops were complaining that while bullet-proof vests did their job adequately, they had the unfortunate side-effect of pushing the treacherous underwires and fixings of normal lingerie into the skin, causing pain and injury. This underweary unpleasantness has now been fixed thanks to the sturdy new street-battle-corsetry. The bras are well padded and free of pesky flesh-puncturing fastenings. 3,000 female cops have been issued with three apiece and are obliged to wear them on duty (not all at once, though, that would be silly). Just to make sure they are employed solely for utilitarian purposes and...

It’s back-to-school time so load up with those pencils, notebooks, rulers and, of course, a bullet-deflecting backpack, if you buy the pitch of the security accessory’s Danvers inventors. Dads Mike Pelonzi, 43, and Joe Curran, 42, dreamed up the bullet-proof backpack, which also blunts knife attacks, to protect their own children after witnessing the Columbine massacre in 1999. “It was after seeing what happened in Columbine that we started thinking about this. I’m a parent and so is Joe and we wanted a way of keeping kids safe at school and this is what we came up with,” said Pelonzi,...

Troy Hurtubise is facing eviction after his Trojan invention flopped.Troy Hurtubise really put everything he had into his bulletproof combat suit. He spent two years and tens of thousands of dollars developing the Trojan, hoping to sell it to the Canadian or American armed forces, or to another friendly government. Now he's broke. Last month, he promised the Trojan would give soldiers in the field affordable, lightweight protection from bullets and bombs alike. He had worked all kinds of extras into the body armour: a ventilation system and multiple lights in the helmet, pepper spray that could shoot from the...

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have great potential applications in making ballistic-resistance materials. The remarkable properties of CNTs makes them an ideal candidate for reinforcing polymers and other materials, and could lead to applications such as bullet-proof vests as light as a T-shirt, shields, and explosion-proof blankets. For these applications, thinner, lighter, and flexible materials with superior dynamic mechanical properties are required. A new study by researchers in Australia explores the energy absorption capacity of a single-walled carbon nanotube under a ballistic impact. The result offers a useful guideline for using CNTs as a reinforcing phase of materials to make...

NEW HAVEN — Federal customs agents seized a Mercedes-Benz on Thursday from an Army reservist who said the armor-plated, bulletproof luxury car likely belonged to Saddam Hussein. First Sgt. William von Zehle said he bought the car while serving in Iraq. U.S. Immigration and Customs enforcement agents said the car, which was also equipped with loudspeakers and hidden microphones, was being treated as a "possible war trophy." "It belonged to the former Iraqi regime," ICE spokesman Dean Boyd said. He said investigators were unsure whether the former Iraqi dictator actually owned it. Von Zehle, of Ridgefield, was quoted in news...

It's been well over a year since I last wrote about body-armor manufacturer DHB Industries (AMEX: DHB), the problem child of the Motley Fool Hidden Gems watch list. Like many reprobate children, DHB is loved by some yet roundly, and often hilariously, criticized by others (kudos for that post to Fool Community member Fiebrudo). On the critical end, the company has come under fire from shareholders for everything from failing to manage its inventory efficiently, to failure to translate its revenues into profits efficiently, to failure (seeing a pattern here?) to put the interests of its shareholders ahead of its...
