Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday said he's cutting off relations with the U.S., and giving U.S. diplomats 72 hours to abandon the country. The socialist leader ordered a review of Venezuela's relationship with the U.S. after the Trump administration officially recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the nation's interim president. The move comes one day after Vice President Mike Pence sent a recorded video of himself to Venezuelans referring to Maduro as "a dictator with no legitimate claim to power." "He has never won the presidency in a free and fair election, and has maintained his grip on power by imprisoning...

January 23, 2019 The President The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: When I extended an invitation on January 3rd for you to deliver the State of the Union address, it was on the mutually agreed upon date, January 29th. At that time, there was no thought that the government would still be shut down. In my further correspondence of January 16th, I said we should work together to find a mutually agreeable date when government has re-opened and I hope that we can still do that. I am writing to inform you that...

President Donald Trump officially recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as Interim President of Venezuela after Guaido declared himself the country's leader amid cheers from thousands who were protesting in the streets. "In its role as the only legitimate branch of government duly elected by the Venezuelan people, the National Assembly invoked the country’s constitution to declare Nicolas Maduro illegitimate, and the office of the presidency therefore vacant," said Trump in a statement. "The people of Venezuela have courageously spoken out against Maduro and his regime and demanded freedom and the rule of law."

Venezuelans filled the streets Wednesday accusing embattled President Nicolas Maduro of usurping power and joining the nation’s re-invigorated opposition movement in demanding he step down as the country reels from a crushing economic crisis forcing millions to flee or go hungry. Pro-government demonstrators dressed in red in support of Maduro were also marching in the capital, at times crossing paths with opposition protesters and shouting “sell outs” and “traitors.” National guardsmen launched tear gas at anti-government protesters in the middle-class neighborhood of El Paraiso but for the most part the marches continued without conflict. “Join us!” the protesters cried out...

The New York Senate passed a radical pro-abortion bill Tuesday that would allow unborn babies to be aborted for basically any reason up to birth. Metro reports the bill passed after abortion activists pushed it for more than a decade in New York. Until now, it failed to pass the state Senate because of Republican lawmakers, but the November election put pro-abortion Democrats in control of both houses. The vote was 38-24. A New York Public Radio reporter said she heard a voice shout, “May almighty God have mercy on this state!” in the Senate soon after the vote. The...

A prominent immigrant-rights activist launched a drive Tuesday to rewrite the American Pledge of Allegiance, saying as it stands now it’s a symbol of “rooted in nativism and white supremacy.” Cesar Vargas, a “Dreamer” who came to the country illegally with his mother and now runs the Dream Action Coalition, says the pledge speaks to fear, while he wants to see a version imbued with “optimism.” “The upgraded version should read: “I pledge allegiance and love to our indigenous and immigrant heritage, rooted in the United States of America, to our civil rights for which we strive, one voice, one...

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will examine New York City’s ban on carrying a licensed and unloaded handgun outside the city limits, the first Second Amendment challenge it has accepted in nearly a decade. The decision to hear the case in the term that begins in October may signal that the reinforced conservative majority on the court is ready to consider more laws that restrict gun rights. New York’s law is not replicated elsewhere: It permits transporting handguns only to firing ranges within the city. Those who challenged the law have a licenses to keep a handgun at...
