After months of false leads and dead ends, there have been some promising updates in the case of Connecticut teen Justina Pelletier. The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families took custody of Justina after her parents disputed the diagnosis doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital’s handed down. Boston Children’s Hospital said the then 15-year-old had a psychiatric disorder – not mitochondrial disease, which her parents had been treating her for at the direction of another doctor. Though a Boston juvenile court judge recently awarded permanent custody of Justina to the state DCF, it would appear, based on the letter by Massachusetts...

A top J Street leader at Brandeis University harassed a pro-Israel student activist early Saturday morning, calling the student a “shit bag” and telling him that “Jews hate you,” according to those who witnessed the incident. Daniel Mael was walking to his dorm room on the university’s campus late Friday night when he encountered Talia Lepson, a J Street U Brandeis board member, who purportedly referred to Mael as a “shit bag” and angrily told him “Jews hate you.” “I don’t feel comfortable on campus knowing people will lob verbal insults at me simply because we disagree,” said Mael, who...

BOSTON — Federal health care officials are balking at Gov. Deval Patrick's request for a permanent waiver for small businesses from some requirements of President Barack Obama's health care law, instead granting the state an additional year to come into compliance. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday that while she can't grant permanent relief for those in the small group market, she can add a year to the three-year transition period Massachusetts was granted last year.

I recently read with joy a conservative blogger’s attempt to connect the TEA party movement to its historic roots; a topic I have been meaning to write about for months now. The blogger rightly said that the “the historical precedent for the TPM wasn’t the Tea Party event in Boston Harbor on December 16, 1773.” I actually uttered an “Amen, brother!” He went on to describe the Continental Association established on October 20, 1774 by the First Continental Congress in response to the Intolerable Acts. That’s when I realized that I have waited long enough to write this article. The...

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, the lone member of the Bay State delegation to vote against Obamacare four years ago, now predicts the law’s botched roll-out will not only cost Democrats valuable House seats but could even jeopardize their control of the Senate in this year’s hotly contested midterm elections. “We will lose seats in the House,” the plain-talking South Boston Democrat said in Boston Herald Radio’s studio yesterday, delivering a harsh diagnosis. “I am fairly certain of that based on the poll numbers that are coming out from the more experienced pollsters down there. And I think we may lose...

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story originally ran in The Eagle-Tribune on April 16, 2000, 20 years after Rosie Ruiz "won" the Boston Marathon. Ruiz, who married and changed her name to Rosie Vivas, spoke exclusively to The Eagle-Tribune a few weeks before the 2000 race. Since the story first ran, former race director Will Cloney has passed away. Ruiz is believed to be living in South Florida and has not run a race since her "victory.'' The voice is very pleasant and professional. It is also unmistakable. "This is Rosie Vivas, may I help you?" Then she realizes the caller who...

Regarding the Boston Bombing and the Bundy Ranch invasion: The nation is getting a wake-up call. Bombs and gun battles in the streets. Heavily armed federal police forces declaring martial law and locking down neighborhoods and huge swaths of land in desert communities. Heavily armed federal land "management" and forest "service" agencies using military grade weapons and tactics to collect civil "debts" and threatening to "shoot" innocent men, women and children who get in their way. And then corrupt U.S. mob senators who are in on the take and who are perpetrating the destruction of America have the audacity to...

In the men's field of the 118th Boston Marathon, American Meb Keflezighi ended a 31-year drought for U.S. runners, after holding off Wilson Chebet of Kenya in a race that came down to the final mile. According to race officials, Keflezighi, 38, ran a 4:56 split at mile 23, when he built a 20-second lead. That lead dwindled as the runners neared the finish line, but Keflezighi held off all challengers to win the race with an unofficial finishing time of 2:08:37. The crowd roared as the Eritrean-born runner who lives in San Diego crossed the finish line, celebrating a...

BOSTON (AP) — With security tight along the 26.2-mile route, tens of thousands of runners set out from the starting line at the Boston Marathon on Monday in a "Boston Strong" show of resilience a year after the deadly bombing. "I showed up, I'm back, and I am going to finish what I didn't finish last year," said Mary Cunningham, 50, of St. Petersburg, Fla., who was stopped a mile short of the finish line by the explosions last year.

Rand Paul will do his best to charm a group Mitt Romney’s top donors next week at an event facilitated by Romney finance director Spencer Zwick. The Friday luncheon will take place in Boston at the offices of Zwick’s private-equity firm, Solamere Capital, according to a source familiar with the event. Romney’s eldest son Tagg is also a managing partner at the firm, and Romney is the executive chairman. The event is yet another signal that Paul is preparing a for a serious presidential bid in 2016. Two years before the GOP primary, Paul is attempting to branch out beyond...

A House Democrat who voted against ObamaCare said the law is likely to sweep Republicans into office in November. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) had dire predictions for his party during a radio interview on Thursday. "We will lose seats in the House," Lynch told Boston Herald Radio. "I am fairly certain of that based on the poll numbers that are coming out from more experienced poll sets down there." He continued, "And I think we may lose the Senate. I think that's a possibility ... primarily because of healthcare." The comments pit Lynch against party chiefs like Rep. Nancy Pelosi...

In what will be a first for New England and perhaps even the rest of the United States, Boston is about to get its very own Uyghur food truck. Although the truck won't have an onboard noodle maker turning out plates of lagman, the truck -- which is scheduled to hit the streets in the coming days -- will be serving Uyghur style kebabs, sold on skewers or inside wraps. The truck, Uyghur Kitchen, is the brainchild of Payzulla Polat, a professional musician currently studying music production and engineering at Boston's Berklee School of Music and who originally hails from...

In the affidavit, the inspector detailed a hunt for Wairi through cyberspace, kicked off by tips from America Online and Dropbox Inc. The search eventually led to Wairi’s Somerville apartment, where law enforcement officials executed a search warrant...

The city’s former snow czar never filled out his department’s time sheets but collected more than $13,000 in overtime last year and scored a hefty vacation and sick time payout upon resigning when Mayor Thomas M. Menino left office, the Herald has learned. Elmo Baldassari, Menino’s deputy commissioner for Public Works, who took home $138,548 last year,
received a $37,613 payout, including $26,645 in un-used sick time, after he

Video Media is now identifying Boston bombing prankster as Jayvon Edson, apparently a 2007 Wakefield High grad. He's on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. He apparently left two backpacks near the Boston Marathon finish line, on the anniversary of the bombings, wearing all black and barefoot and shouting "Boston Strong". Police detonated at least one of the backpacks.
