January 31, 2014 Milton, Vermont and Calgary, Alberta, Canada - Three years ago in January 2011, I produced my first Earthfiles news reports about mysterious, unexplained booms occasionally being reported in various parts of North America. Then a year later on January 18-19, 2012 , in addition to persistent, mysterious booms came reports of mysterious horn or trumpet sounds. I did my first interviews with American earwitnesses of highly strange trumpet sounds in Gallatin, Tennessee. The first was a retired real estate agent northeast of Nashville, who described for me the eerie chorus of trumpets that suddenly filled the air...

Several callers told police that these booms were stronger than those from last week, but no damage has been reported. City officials have been in contact with the...

CLINTONVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- ... The strange disturbance sounds like distant thunder, fireworks or someone slamming a heavy door. At first, many people were amused or merely curious. But after three restless nights, aggravation is mounting. And some folks are considering leaving town until investigators determine the source of the racket. There have been no reports of injury or damage, despite some residents saying they could feel the ground roll beneath their feet. City officials say they have investigated every possible human cause. They checked water, sewer and gas lines, contacted the military about any exercises in the area, reviewed...

White House Enacts Rules Inhibiting Media From Covering Oil Spill By Noel Sheppard Created 07/03/2010 - 11:28 The White House Thursday enacted stronger rules to prevent the media from showing what's happening with the oil spill in the Gulf Coast. CNN's Anderson Cooper reported that evening, "The Coast Guard today announced new rules keeping photographers and reporters and anyone else from coming within 65 feet of any response vessel or booms out on the water or on beaches -- 65 feet." He elaborated, "Now, in order to get closer, you have to get direct permission from the Coast Guard captain...

The president is starting to look snakebit. He's starting to look unlucky, like Jimmy Carter. It wasn't Mr. Carter's fault that the American diplomats were taken hostage in Tehran, but he handled it badly, and suffered. He defied the rule of the King in "Pippin," the Broadway show of Carter's era, who spoke of "the rule that every general knows by heart, that it's smarter to be lucky than it's lucky to be smart." Mr. Carter's opposite was Bill Clinton, on whom fortune smiled with eight years of relative peace and a worldwide economic boom. What misfortune Mr. Clinton experienced...

Residents in Josephine and Perdido Beach are using what they have -- hay and agricultural netting -- to create booms to protect the coastlines of their remote Baldwin County communities. The idea, and the speed of boom making, greatly increased when a Christmas tree farm donated one of its bundling machines. The amateur boom makes saw their production go from 8 to 40 booms an hour. It all started when a customer of Baldwin County Sewer Service called requesting a donation of hay, according to system spokesman Charlie Baumhauer. Finding out that the hay would be used to collect oil,...

MINNEAPOLIS - SNIPPET: "According to the Minneapolis Police Department, more than 100 loud booms have been heard since last summer, always at night, and often on a Wednesday or a Friday. The most recent reports are all coming from a stretch along the Mississippi River, between Lake Street and the Ford bridge. About half the reports turn out to be either electrical transformers or fireworks -- but the other half are unidentified exploding objects."

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- In her bustling corner real estate brokerage, Ana Laura Pulido is doing her best business in years, enjoying a sort of Mexican immunity from the U.S. housing crash. "It's a time of hope," said Pulido, who has sold hundreds of homes to middle-income families since 1992. "The buyer today is more aware. People buy with more ease. They can plan long-term." Long thrashed by swings in the U.S. economy, Mexico now boasts a thriving housing sector whose record growth leads Latin America -- a sign of increased economic stability and an outlet for investors looking to...
