We knew it was going to be a bad election night for the Democrats when former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe announced on NBC's "Today" program that "the results of these elections tend to be overread." Certainly that was not the prevailing opinion in Democratic circles in 2008, when giddiness over Barack Obama's election reached manic proportions. Virginia, which voted Democratic for president for the first time since 1964, was singled out as an indication of the shape of things to come. In 2008, Mr. Plouffe bragged that only Mr. Obama could make Virginia competitive, and when he won the...

American voters have delivered a sharp rebuke to Barack Obama by rejecting Democratic candidates in Virginia, the swing state that helped deliver him the White House almost exactly a year ago. Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate, overwhelmed his Democratic opponent Creigh Deeds, for whom Mr Obama had campaigned, to become Virginia governor. Republicans also won the races in Virginia for lieutenant governor and attorney general.

Washington (CNN) – President Obama is not planning to watch Tuesday nights election returns, Obama aides Robert Gibbs and David Axelrod tell CNN. Obama is more likely to watch Tuesday night's Chicago Bulls game than any political coverage, according to Axelrod. The president's senior staff have also decided not to hold a watch party to keep an eye on election returns as they come in.

RICHMOND, Va. – Voters cast their ballots Tuesday for a new Virginia governor in a closely watched race that has focused on promises of jobs and critiques of President Barack Obama's policies a year after he won the state. Interviews with voters leaving polling stations in Virginia showed that independents broke heavily for Republican Bob McDonnell, fleeing Democrat R. Creigh Deeds. Independents are considered the crown jewel of elections because they often determine outcomes.

With 2/3 of the ballots counted in Virginia, McDonnell (R) is pounding Deeds (D) 61%-39%. The last Rasmussen poll had McDonnell ahead 54%-41%. There's a big difference between a 22% win and a 13% win. As I suspected would be the case, it appears the GOP, especially conservatives are HIGHLY motivated, while the democrats are not.

With Republican Bob McDonnell holding a wide lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds in the Virginia race for governor, the former state attorney general could be at the fore of a GOP takeover on Election Day. (snip) Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, told Fox News he expects McDonnell to win big -- and usher other Republicans into office along the way. "McDonnell is not only going to win -- he's going to win by a landslide. He's going to pull his entire ticket to victory," he said, predicting GOP gains in the House of Delegates...

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - It's Election Day and polling places across Hampton Roads and all over Virginia are busy with the hustle and bustle of people checking in to vote. This morning, some voters in Suffolk hit a registration snag when they appeared in the electronic poll log as absentee voters. Voting officials said a few voters had to visit the registrar's office to confirm they were not registered as absentee voters. Voting officials then started cross-checking the electronic log against the paper poll log, which had correct voter information according to voting officials. It seems if voters registered to...

At a get-out-the-vote rally in Fairfax County, Moran said: “I mean, if the Republicans were running in Afghanistan, they’d be running on the Taliban ticket as far as I can see.” Moran was talking about Republicans Robert F. McDonnell for governor, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and state Sen. Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, who is running for attorney general. By some accounts, the three represent the most conservative Republican ticket to run in Virginia in many years. Moran’s comments clearly were aimed to motivate Democratic voters to turn out on Tuesday and vote blue. According to WAMU, McDonnell spokeswoman Crystal Cameron...

*break* Does the GOP enjoy an electoral lock on the attorney general's office? The past four winners have been Republicans in large part because their campaigns have stressed the prosecutorial aspects of the position. The victors have run as crusaders determined to smite the bad guys. This year offers a twist, as Democrat Steve Shannon emphasizes his experience as a prosecutor while Republican Ken Cuccinelli defines the attorney general as the state's counsel. The job indeed seems corporate in nature. Shannon targets sexual abuse of minors; Cuccinelli advocates on behalf of mental health. The candidates score in motivation and sincerity....

RICHMOND | Virginia Republicans are gathering this weekend to settle the few remaining questions about their slate of candidates — and the outcome could forecast how the party intends to run against the Democrats in the fall elections. State Sen. Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, former GOPAC-Virginia Chairman David M. Foster, and former U.S. Attorney John Brownlee are facing off for the party's nomination for attorney general. The post was vacated earlier this year by Bob McDonnell, who enters the convention unopposed in his bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. Mr. Cuccinelli, a lawyer who is the last remaining Republican state...

My Endorsement February 27, 2009 Dear xxxxxx, As we approach the end of the General Assembly Session, it is now time to turn our attention to the races for statewide office and for the House of Delegates. When Gilmore got into the race for U.S. Senate, he thought it was going to be about taxes. Instead, everywhere he goes, people talk to him about one issue: gas prices. "We're gonna drill here, drill now, and reduce these prices," said Gilmore. It's a line that pleases people who gather to hear him speak. Along with drilling, Gilmore wants to tap deep into Virginia's coal seams. "This is a national asset for us, and if we use clean coal technology and push that forward, you can use coal consistent with the environment," said Gilmore. The latest polls show Gilmore...

No Bolling For Governor? Reports Say Lieutenant Governor Won't Run For Top Job By Associated Press Monday, March 24, 2008 RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling will seek re-election next year, two people familiar with his campaign said. Bolling intends to announce his plans in an early afternoon Capitol Square news conference. Bolling's decision not to run for governor combined with former Governor George Allen's announcement to sit out the governor's race leaves Attorney General Bob McDonnell uncontested for the Republican nomination. The election, still 20 months away, finds Democrats Brian Moran, a Delegate from Alexandria, and state...

BILL BOLLING TIMES-DISPATCH GUEST COLUMNIST Today marks the beginning of one of the most important, yet underappreciated, weeks of the year: Sunshine Week. While issues such as transportation, health care, and education rightfully grab headlines 51 weeks of the year, public knowledge and understanding of these issues would not be possible without open government and freedom of information. Our Founding Fathers understood that only an open government could effectively meet the needs of those it governed. However, as Virginia's population grew, so did the size of government, which made it more difficult to maintain transparency in government agencies, the elections...

It's become clear that Virginia's gubernatorial election between former Attorney General Jerry Kilgore and Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine will not be the only state race between a conservative Republican and a liberal Democrat this year.

Virginia Republicans should be delighted by the news that Leslie Byrne, a liberal politician who previously served in the House of Delegates, the state Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor this month with approximately 35 percent of the vote.
