  • Jindal Angers Hollywood Producers by Axing Louisiana’s Film Tax Credits

    National Review ^ | 07/02/2015 | Jon Hartley
Last week, before Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal declared himself a 2016 presidential candidate, the governor quietly signed legislation into law that caps state tax credits for film in the state at $180 million per year that will save the state $77 million annually — a wise move, given that the Louisiana government currently faces a $1.3 billion budget deficit. In response, Hollywood producers have threatened to take their film projects to states that offer larger film tax credits, such as Georgia. Capping film tax credits is a new position for Governor Jindal. He has largely been supportive of tax credits,...

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a 2016 Republican presidential candidate, tells Breitbart News exclusively that he’s appalled by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) decision to turn against defending civil liberties. “Their hypocrisy is absolutely stunning,” Jindal said when asked about how the ACLU’s website, and their legal argument history, is filled with defenses of religious liberty. ... Jindal’s interview with Breitbart News came just hours after the ACLU announced it would be suing Jindal over an executive order he issued in the state of Louisiana aimed at protecting religious freedom. The executive order, as Breitbart News reported, tried to protect...

Louisiana officials have begun issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court Jon Geggenheimer confirmed in a telephone interview that a license was issued there Monday morning. It was believed to be the first license issued to a same-sex couple in the state. The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, but clerks around the state had held off on immediately issuing licenses after consulting with lawyers. Gov. Bobby Jindal is opposed to gay marriage but has said the state would comply with the ruling.

Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is, we are informed by all the best people, insufficiently ethnic. Governor Jindal, born in Baton Rouge, is Punjabi in the sense that your average Philadelphian with a surname ending in a vowel is Italian: ancestrally, trivially. Governor Jindal’s speech, culture, mannerisms, politics, religion, habits, and affect are as far removed from Chandigarh, the north Indian city where his parents met, as they are from Bogota or Stuttgart. The governor insistently rejects the tossed salad model in favor of the melting pot: an American is an American is an American, in his view. For his political...

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.) said on Sunday that he is not changing his mind on the definition of marriage. “I think marriage is between a man and a woman,” Jindal told host Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “My position is not going to evolve,” he said. “I want to run a campaign where we do not give up on our principles,” the 2016 GOP presidential candidate added. “Establishment conservatives do not want us to do that.” Jindal’s remarks follow Friday’s landmark Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. He said on Sunday that Louisiana would not start recognizing...

In the wake of Friday’s historic Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality, Republicans did not hold back their rage – but few politicians went as far as 2016 candidate Gov. Bobby Jindal. The Louisiana Republican, who launched a longshot bid for the presidency last week, suggested that the 5-4 ruling, which made same-sex marriage legal throughout the nation, was cause for disbanding the entire Supreme Court. “The Supreme Court is completely out of control, making laws on their own, and has become a public opinion poll instead of a judicial body,” Jindal said in a statement on Friday. “If we...

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal slammed the Supreme Court on Friday after its ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage. “The Supreme Court is completely out of control, making laws on their own, and has become a public opinion poll instead of a judicial body,” the 2016 presidential candidate said in a statement.“If we want to save some money, let’s just get rid of the court,” Jindal added. The 5-4 ruling, which forces all states to recognize same-sex marriage under the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, will fundamentally transform the institution of marriage, he later said. “Marriage between a man and a woman...

With the Supreme Court’s historic ruling that effectively legalizes same-sex marriage in all 50 states, the 2016 presidential candidates really have no choice today but to comment on the decision from one angle of another. Here’s what they had to say. Hillary Clinton was quick out of the gate with a personal statement, followed by a rebranding of her campaign logo that has already been retweeted more than 20,000 times:

Bolstered by a recent Quinnipiac survey that shows him with a double digit lead over the GOP field in Ohio, the state he has served as governor since 2011, John Kasich says the chances he will toss his hat into the Republican primary contest for the party’s 2016 Presidential nomination in 2016 are “looking pretty darn good.” The Quinnipiac poll also has more encouraging news for Kasich. He is the only Republican candidate who beats Hillary in Ohio. Kasich is widely expected to announce his candidacy for President in about two weeks. If he does, he will join a field...

On the same day that Bobby Jindal announced he's running for president, The Washington Post published an article implicitly questioning why the Louisiana governor indentifies more as an American than an Indian American. Jindal's parents were born and raised in India before immigrating to the United States. "Yet many see him as a man who has spent a lifetime distancing himself from his Indian roots," Annie Gowen and Tyler Bridges reported from Khanpur, India. The article was reminiscent of Mark Halperin's interview of presidential candidate Ted Cruz in May. Halperin, of Bloomberg Politics, asked Cruz a series of questions seeking...

Question: Does America really need another skinny, big-eared man of color as president? Answer: Yes, if the next one is a God-fearing, Gun-toting,red-blooded first generation American who loves his wife, family and country. If you consider the concept of the American melting pot a form of racial “micro-aggression” you probably won’t like Bobby Jindal – a first generation Indian (no, sorry, not Native) who has assimilated American values better than most Americans whose roots go back generations. On the other hand, if you think America needs fewer salad bowls and more fondues, this guy’s for you. Read or watch Bobby Jindal’s all-American...

KENNER, La. — Bobby Jindal went there. As the 13th Republican candidate to enter the presidential race, the Louisiana governor tried to grab attention by going negative with his announcement speech Wednesday, smacking down his rivals as “selfish” politicians who are nothing more than “talkers,” and calling out Jeb Bush as a mushy conservative. “You’ve heard Jeb Bush saying we need to be able to lose the primary to win the general election. We’re going to help him do that,” Jindal said, kicking off his long-shot bid for the GOP presidential nomination. Presenting himself as an unapologetically religious, small-government conservative,...

HOUSTON, Texas — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, issued the following statement welcoming Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal into the race for the 2016 Republican nomination for President of the United States:“I have great respect for Bobby Jindal. He is a friend, a man of faith, and a fearless champion for conservative values. I am glad he is joining the field of GOP candidates and welcome him to the competition! As an effective, principled governor of Louisiana, he brings many talents and strengths to this race that will raise the bar for us all and prepare the eventual GOP nominee to...

In n 2013 Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal called on the GOP to “stop being the stupid party.” A former Rhodes scholar with serious policy chops, he appeared perfectly positioned to elevate the discussion of ideas. Instead, Jindal has chosen to run in 2016 as the stupid party’s standard-bearer. As Jindal prepares to make his White House bid official on Wednesday, he is struggling to break the one percent mark in national polls. That puts him a dozen places behind the top-tier triumvirate of Walker, Bush and Rubio. It’s possible Jindal will emerge from the back of the pack at some...

SNIP Jindal took office in January of 2008, and 2015 will be his last year in office. He has scored well on the Cato Fiscal Policy Report Card on America’s Governors earning an “A” in 2010, and a “B” in both 2012 and 2014. All three report cards commend Jindal’s resolve to cut Louisiana state spending. Since fiscal year 2009, the first full fiscal year of Jindal’s term, state general fund spending has decreased by 7 percent. Per capita state spending has fallen from $2,089 in 2009 to $1,883 in 2015, a decrease of 10 percent. This spending restraint is...

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a one-time rising star in the Republican Party now struggling to become one again, will announce Wednesday afternoon whether he intends to run for president in 2016. Jindal's appearance -- to be held in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner at 5 p.m. Eastern time -- does not seem much of a mystery. The 44-year-old two-term governor has given every indication that he will run. He has already traveled multiple times to early-primary states -- spending 45 percent of his days outside of Louisiana last year. And this year, some of Jindal's top state-government aides have...

We’re not supposed to tell other people how they should self-identify, are we? I’ve been told over and over that it’s wrong to do that. Especially if you’re a white person. And if you’re a white male… OMG! Yet here we have a Republican politician of Indian descent telling us how he chooses to self-identify, and a bunch of white people are right there to call him an Uncle Tandoori.

Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, the funding arm of the political network backed by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, wants a lot more hard information from the crowded field of presidential contenders before deciding what to do with its considerable resources. The group is pressing every 2016 candidate to detail on the record their plans for economic growth, deficit reduction, entitlement reform, criminal justice and even foreign policy. The tax-exempt entity, a key node in a constellation of conservative entities that aims to spend $889 million before the next White House election, distributed a detailed survey Thursday to...
