Hardline takeover of British mosques Andrew Norfolk Almost half of Britain’s mosques are under the control of a hardline Islamic sect whose leading preacher loathes Western values and has called on Muslims to “shed blood” for Allah, an investigation by The Times has found. Riyadh ul Haq, who supports armed jihad and preaches contempt for Jews, Christians and Hindus, is in line to become the spiritual leader of the Deobandi sect in Britain. The ultra-conservative movement, which gave birth to the Taleban in Afghanistan, now runs more than 600 of Britain’s 1,350 mosques, according to...

WASHINGTON -- The Mexican Consulate in Atlanta plans to set up a mobile office in Hickory Hill on Saturday to distribute the form of identity cards that U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., would prohibit using for opening bank accounts. Blackburn introduced legislation earlier this week to close what she considers a loophole in banking regulations that permit banks to use the matricula consular card as part of the identification for opening a bank account and eventually obtaining credit cards. She has cited danger to financial institutions as a concern. "Our preference would be to see the Mexican government join us...

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., has called for the House Financial Services Committee to investigate Bank of America's practice of extending credit through secured credit cards sometimes used by undocumented workers. "As a member of the Financial Services committee, I believe that thorough Congressional oversight is necessary to address this legal loophole, which allows banks to issue credit cards to those who are in this country illegally," Blackburn said in a statement Friday. "We must protect our country and financial institutions from the security, financial, and terrorist risks this poses," Blackburn said. The call for an investigation followed...

A PRIEST is set to install high fences around his church in Blackburn in a bid to combat racist attacks. The move was revealed as a Muslim leader blasted the gang of youths which targeted St Joseph's RC Church, in Audley, Blackburn. Coun Salim Mulla, secretary of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, said the gang were "disgraceful and disrespectful" and he was so angry that when he found out who was responsible he would personally report them to the police. The latest incident happened on Sunday at 11pm and although the church's alarm system prevented the youths from gaining access...

Amid the race between politicians to capitalize on consumer anger at high gas prices, at least one member of Congress, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., expressed a much-needed perspective on the problem -- these same politicians own a share of the blame....Rep. Blackburn observed, “If we're going to work toward [energy independence], we’re going to have to do some things differently. Now, I can tell you one of the things that I wish had been done differently is over the past 30 years, we have had environmental extremists driving energy policy in this country, saying no to everything.”

The Dean of Blackburn is a holy man and, as such, is not generally touched by earthly desires. He has serious misgivings about the Iraq war. He is a sensible, mild-mannered sort of fellow, not given to unnecessary exaggeration. But that was yesterday. That was BC. Before Condoleezza. "Oh, I thought she was charming," says the Very Rev Christopher Armstrong, reflecting on his hour-long meeting with the US Secretary of State in Blackburn Cathedral. He pauses. A playful half-smile curls his lips. His eyes glaze over slightly and gaze into the middle distance. It is as if he is recalling...

If American democracy is finally done in, the perpetrators will unlikely be Hitlerian figures whose strutting authoritarianism is plain to see, but a collection of well-meaning, schoolmarm-like activists who aim to restrict our freedoms for our own supposed good. They may well be members of Common Cause. You never figure an outfit like Common Cause to be a danger to the republic's must crucial principles, do you? But be vigilant: Common Cause is in the forefront of those cutting the First Amendment down to an imperceptible size. The group does not want anything blocking the way as government squelches free...
