Considering that news is still dominated by the tsunami and its aftereffects (and aid and recovery efforts), my mind is still on that kind of topic. I recalled back during the days when the Chicxulub impact site was being identified as the main Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) event that the supporting evidence for the regional location was thick layers of ejecta at the K/T boundary found around the Caribbean. I checked for pictures and found a few; below is one of the best from Belize. Can you see the K/T boundary? Go to the linked article to read more about this image...

Island of shattered dreams?

Editor's Note: Since April of 2001 longtime WorldNetDaily contributor Anthony C. LoBaido has made no less than eight trips to the idyllic Caribbean nation of Belize. In this three-part Christmas special, LoBaido weaves together the stories of an at-risk baby, modern Pharisees seeking to cast the first stone, thwarted would-be assassins and a real-life Cinderella. The latter is Miss Belize, Karen Russell, who not long ago turned the Miss World Pageant upside down – but in a way no one ever could have imagined. All of the facets of this story are presented within the context of a nation battling an onslaught of destructive local, national and global forces.

IN THE MAYA MOUNTAINS, Belize - Timothy J. Baroni stepped out of his tent and checked his gear: hunting knife, heavy boots, tackle box, sharp machete and two fine cigars. "All set," he said. "Let's go find some fungi." With that, Dr. Baroni and two colleagues, Dr. D. Jean Lodge and Dr. Dan Czederpiltz, plunged into the Central American jungle. The three are mycologists - mushroom experts - who spent 10 days in August searching for new species in the mountains of southern Belize. The ridge they were exploring, Doyle's Delight, is nine miles east of the Guatemalan border and...

Glancing at the list of 13 countries arguing against Israel and the security fence at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague, it is easy to understand what most of these countries are dong there. For instance, little explanation is needed to understand why Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Cuba, Indonesia, Jordan, and Sudan have taken the time and energy to argue against Israel. But why Belize? What was this small Central American country on the Caribbean coast, about a two-hour flight from Miami, doing at The Hague? Why was the representative from Belize, which has diplomatic ties with...

The cabinet secretary of Belize, one of seven nations slated to argue Tuesday against the legality of the West Bank fence in The Hague, said that the decision to testify may have been made in error, and that it was not in the interest of the Central American nation to take part in the proceedings. Belize, Cuba, Indonesia, Jordan and Madagascar are scheduled to appear before the International Court of Justice at The Hague when it reconvenes for a second day on Tuesday morning to hear arguments against the West Bank separation barrier. Malaysia and Senegal will present their arguments...

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush (news - web sites) announced agreements with another four countries to exempt Americans from prosecution by the International Criminal Court, which it staunchly opposes. The 1998 Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court has been ratified by 90 countries, but the court faces opposition from the United States. Bush administration officials fear that Americans, particularly soldiers abroad, could fall victim to politically motivated prosecutions. The Bush administration has signed bilateral treaties with more than three dozen countries that have agreed not to hand over American citizens to the court. The latest, according to a statement...

Area professor breaks new ground on Maya By Roger Croteau San Antonio Express-News Web Posted : 09/28/2003 12:00 AM Findings by a Texas State University-San Marcos professor at an archaeological site in Belize have pushed back the date for the rise of the Maya civilization to 300 years earlier than previously believed. Anthropology professor James J. Garber has worked at the site, known as Blackman Eddy, each summer since 1990. Although smaller than many other Maya ruins, it was a major cultural center in the Upper Belize Valley. "I would say it's a very important finding," said Sandra Noble, executive...
