NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was paid nearly $128 million over the past two years through his salary, bonuses and other benefits, according to The New York Times. That figure, per the report, was discussed at the league-wide owners meeting in New York earlier this week. About 90% of Goodell’s pay over the past two years came from bonuses alone, four sources told The New York Times — which was so large “because he had helped secure such favorable labor and media deals.” Specifically, Goodell was paid $63,900,050 each year — which totals up to $127.8 million. That, per The New...

In the most direct comments on the years-long standoff between the league and its most high-profile exile, Goodell held out an olive branch, offering him a “role” in the league’s new efforts on social justice, but he also “encourage[s]” teams to consider signing Kaepernick to a contract. That would certainly make the NFL and Goodell look better with a significant segment of...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday that the league had “moved on” from last month’s long-awaited workout with Colin Kaepernick, three years after the former 49ers quarterback kneeled during the pre-game national anthem in protest of racial injustice. The protests drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump and Kaepernick said teams would not sign him because of his activism. He eventually settled a collusion grievance case with the National Football League in February. The NFL announced the special workout with just a few days’ notice, and the 32-year-old quarterback moved the tryout from the...

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday issued a memo to all 32 teams addressing the issue of players not standing for the national anthem before games. In the memo, Goodell stated that the league believes that "everyone should stand for the national anthem" and "our country, and our fans expect that of us." "It only took Roger, what, two or three weeks of public humiliation to finally get the message?" Newt Gingrich said on "Fox & Friends," noting that President Donald Trump has been a fierce critic of NFL players who refuse to stand for the national anthem, and the...

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin indicated Sunday night that he did not want offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva to stand for the national anthem, instead of sitting it out with the rest of his teammates. Villanueva, a former Army Ranger who served three tours in Afghanistan, was the only Steelers player to stand for the anthem. While Villanueva stood in the tunnel, hand over his heart, the rest of the team remained in the locker room in protest of President Trump’s comments that players who kneel during the national anthem should be fired. I'm already not enthused by the coming of this NFL season, but out of habit I went to turn on the game tonight after 8:30. And all I saw was BS ceremonies. Good night NFL, and your sponsors. I'll try again on Sunday afternoon with the guys at my club. If it weren't for them I wouldn't bother watching until the Giants play on Sunday night. (I HATE night games.) ML/NJ
