The Czech government has decided the country will stay out of a United Nations pact promoting an international approach to safe and orderly migration. Wednesday’s decision comes after Prime Minister Andrej Babis vehemently opposed the document, saying it poses a threat for his country’s security and sovereignty. Babis has argued the U.N. pact that is the subject of an adoption meeting set for Dec. 11-12 in Marrakech, Morocco, is dangerous even though it’s nonbinding because “it, in fact, defines migration as a basic human right.”

The 63-year-old Andrej Babis was officially tasked with naming the new Czech cabinet on Wednesday, with President Milos Zeman designating him prime minister in the Prague Castle ceremony. "Our country should be more active towards solving illegal immigration," Babis said after accepting his appointment. Babis' ANO movement won 78 deputy seats in the October vote, putting it far above any other of the eight remaining parliamentary parties in the state. Even so, ANO remains well short of a majority in 200-seat chamber. The populist Babis has so far failed to ensure support of any of the other factions. Babis is...

Populist billionaire Andrej Babis and his party have won the Czech Republic's general election. Mr. Babis, 63, is the country's second-richest man and campaigned on an anti-establishment and Eurosceptic platform. With all votes counted, his centrist movement ANO (Yes) collected a share of almost 30%-nearly three times that of the closet rival.... he was not prepared to cooperate with either the far-right, anti-EU Freedom and Direct Democracy Party or the Communist Psrty.... He says he would not bring the Czech Republic into the Eurozone, but he wants the country to stay in the EU, telling Reuters he would propose changes...

The centrist ANO movement led by populist Andrej Babis decisively won the Czech Republic’s parliamentary election Saturday in a vote that shifted the country to the right and paved the way for the euroskeptic billionaire to become its next prime minister. With all votes counted, the Czech Statistics Office said ANO won in a landslide, capturing 29.6 percent of the vote, or 78 of the 200 seats in the lower house of Parliament. “It’s a huge success,” the 63-year-old Babis told supporters and journalists at his headquarters in Prague. Babis is the county’s second-richest man, with a media empire including...

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Czech billionaire Andrej Babis won a thumping victory in Saturday’s parliamentary election, giving the anti-establishment businessman facing fraud charges a strong mandate to cut taxes, lift public investment and fight immigration. Babis's ANO movement held an unbeatable 30.04 percent of the vote with 94.4 percent of voting stations having reported -- almost three times any other party and giving it a chance to rule with just one partner in a coalition. (Graphic tmsnrt.rs/2vO4hPW) ANO is the first party to break a quarter century of dominance by two mainstream center-right and center-left parties, highlighting a shifting political landscape...
