The Crossroads of the West Gun Show attracted thousands of firearms enthusiasts to Ontario Convention Center today. The crowd was so large that officials slowed entry to the show to a virtual crawl during the show's early hours to avoid overcrowding the venue. Crossroads of the West typically attracts about 7,000 visitors during its Ontario appearances, show owner Bob Templeton said. He expects double that amount this weekend. The crowd, he said, is likely a reaction to expectations that Congress will at least give serious consideration to major gun control legislation this year. For example, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has...

Guns: The mayor of what is at once America's most gun-controlled city and its murder capital wants an assault weapons ban like the one he pushed in 1994. Except it didn't work then, and it won't work now. Nathaniel T. Jackson, 40, an alleged gang member with a long arrest record, was gunned down last week outside a store in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, becoming the Windy City's 500th murder victim in 2012. Up to 80% of Chicago's murders and shootings are gang-related, according to police. By one estimate, the city has almost 70,000 gang members. A police audit last spring...

Sleight Of Arms: Liberals’ anti-gun pincer movement by Daniel Clark In the aftermath of the mass murder (not “the tragedy”) in Newtown, Connecticut, we’re hearing the predictable calls for “commonsense” gun legislation. President Obama is pushing for a reinstatement of the “assault weapons ban” that expired in 2004, in contradiction of the “I believe in the Second Amendment” sweet nothings he’d been whispering through much of his first term. The argument behind such a ban is that there’s no reason for a private citizen to own military-style weapons, or in the president’s words, “AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers,...

The widely anticipated senate bill soon to be introduced by gun-banner extraordinaire Diane Feinstein will do far more than eliminate “assault weapons” (AW’s) and “high capacity” magazines. According to a summary on the senator’s website, concealed carry license holder Feinstein–who proposed an outright ban on all handguns while packing her own for self-defense—will demand that owners of guns affected by her legislation: pay a $200 fee for EACH banned weapon owned; submit pictures, fingerprints and register AW’s with the ATF; have local law enforcement attest to the owner’s identity and specify the address at which each weapon will be kept....

There is a drumbeat of demand for a new federal assault-weapons ban to prevent more tragedies like the one that happened in Connecticut. If we had not tried the experiment, you could honestly wonder if it would do any good. But the policy has been tried and found wanting. In 1999, the National Institute of Justice published a study by criminologists Jeffrey Roth and Christopher Koper, “Impacts of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban: 1994–96.†It examined the effects of the federal assault-weapons ban in its first two years of operation and found no statistically significant reduction in murder rates. “The...

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots, sparked by the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers accused of beating the now-deceased Rodney King. During the five days, mobs around Los Angeles looted stores, burnt 3,767 buildings, caused more than $1 billion in property damage, and led to the deaths of more than 50 people and left another 4,000 injured. A story that has been forgotten since then is that of the brave storeowners in Koreatown who fended off mobs with handguns, rifles and assault weapons. On the second day of the riots, the police...

Unfortunately, this doesn't make the news much, but almost every day Jews are being stoned by Arabs in Judea and Samaria. Here you an see how they ambush a convoy of army jeeps. The bad news is that this also happens to civilian cars, with mothers, elderly and children. Rocks can kill and seriously injure, yet the world media is silent.

WHITE PLAINS (AP) -- Westchester County will not host a gun show early next year in the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Conn. County Executive Rob Astorino said it would be inappropriate for the county to hold the event. Former County Executive Andrew Spano had banned the show after the 1999 Columbine school shootings in Colorado. The ban remained in effect for more than a decade. Astorino brought back the show in 2010. His decision comes after Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner called on the county to cancel the show at the government-owned building. Westchester Board of Legislators Chairman...

(President Barack Obama announced Tuesday that he is “actively supporting” a proposal to reinstate a ban on so-called “assault weapons.†In addition, he supports a ban on the sale of firearms from one person to another without federal involvement which gun-control groups have dubbed a “gun show loophole,†and a ban on standard-capacity magazines for rifles, pistols, and shotguns. Instead, he would impose an arbitrarily determined ten-round limit to magazines.California Democrat Dianne Feinstein — who carried a concealed weapons permit while calling for disarming American citizens — is once again promising to introduce an “assault weapons†ban in the...

Since I've been hearing rumblings about Feinstein reviving her dumbassed assault weapons ban, and I have limited confidence in the spine of the GOP Congress -- I'm in the market for an AR-15. My wife was going to get me a crossbow or 30-06 sniper rifle for my 10th wedding anniversary this month (she's definitely a keeper) ... but neither of those are likely to be banned, so I'll move the AR up the list. I looked at a local tactical firearms dealer yesterday evening. They had a DPMS/Panther Arms military-spec AR-15 with a rail system in 5.56 for a...

The key to the gun banners’ success will be divide and conquer. If they can convince hunters and householders that assault rifles and high-capacity magazines are “too much,” they will succeed. If gun owners stand together, the Second Amendment will be preserved. If they don’t, it will be endangered. Coming months will show which it is. In the wake of the heartbreaking mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary, Democrat politicians across the country have pushed hard to capitalize on the tragedy to advance one of their long-held political passions – banning guns. Grandstanding politician after grandstanding politician – some wiping...

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, numerous Democrats have called for legislation banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Unfortunately, such bans are empty gestures, certain to offend many law-abiding citizens but highly unlikely to reduce gun violence. Simply put, so-called “assault weapons” are nowhere near the root of the American violence problem. According to FBI data, of the two-thirds of murders that involve firearms, about 69 percent involve handguns rather than rifles or shotguns of any kind. Most estimates place the contribution of assault weapons to gun crime at around 1 or 2 percent. These numbers...

Bob Costas is in trouble with football fans, a large majority of which are gun owners, and his insulting attempt at an apology is only adding fuel to the fire. --IMAGE HERE-- But let’s start at the beginning. It all started with FoxSports.com columnist Jason Whitlock. In the wake of the media frenzy surrounding Jovan Belcher’s murder of his girlfriend and subsequent suicide, Whitlock penned an article in which he launched a scathing attack on the Second Amendment and those who value it. He starts his rant with an assertion that the Second Amendment is threatening to the very liberty...

President Obama may have been tossing a bone to his base, but one answer in the second presidential debate could come back to haunt him with a key voter group -- gun owners. When asked what the administration has done or plans to do to limit assault weapons at the Oct. 16 debate, Obama said part of the solution to gun violence "is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced." That comment caught fire with gun owners. "If there are undecided voters who put the Second Amendment as their first issue, then certainly the president's remark about...

“[F]rankly, in my home town of Chicago, there’s an awful lot of violence and they’re not using AK-47s.” - President Obama Oct 16, 2012 --IMAGE HERE-- As co-founder and spokesperson for OpenCarry.org, I very much wanted to hear a question about guns put to the candidates. More specifically, like many Americans, I wanted to hear what kind of Supreme Court justices the candidates would nominate where gun rights are concerned. In fact, we formulated a question that encompassed the core of these concerns and issued a press release urging that the candidates be asked the following: A divided United States...

Shortly following the Aurora tragedy, a non-gun-owner friend of mine, obviously upset, began to question me about why I supported ownership of ‘deadly assault weapons.’ Even as he continued his extended, impassioned diatribe, I could tell that he was yet another victim of the media’s ‘assault weapon’ disinformation campaign. --IMAGE HERE-- When he paused, I asked him what he thought an ‘assault weapon’ actually was. Looking at me as if I were mentally challenged, he said that everyone knows “assault weapons are military-style, fully-automatic guns capable of emptying a 100 round magazine in 3 seconds.” When I told him that...

Just like the majority of police officers who never have to fire their gun during the course of a career, most civilians will never be shot at while watching a movie, browsing in a shopping mall or attending school. But for those few that do have the misfortune to be an unwilling participant in an ambush here are a few rules of thumb you may find useful. The police can't protect you. The Aurora, CO police force is a fine, highly motivated department - I know because the police association was formerly my client. There were officers already at the...

“Obama still wants Congress to reinstitute a federal ban on military-style assault weapons … but the president is not and has not been pushing for that ban … There are things that we can do short of legislation and short of gun laws.” - White House Press Secretary Jay Carney IMAGE HERE In yesterday’s column, I noted that President Obama seems to be responding to pressure from gun control advocates in a way that he has previously avoided. I must not have been the only one to sense the change in the political winds flowing from the White House because...
