SUMMARY: Doomsayers are firing wild bursts of worrisome predictions about the expiration of the ban on assault weapons. A cry of alarm is sounding around the country. In mid-September, the decade-old federal law banning a number of military-style "assault weapons" expires. To hear some of our colleagues in the news media talk, all hell is going to break loose starting Sept. 14. "Anyone seeking weapons of mass destruction inside the United States may find it considerably easier after Sept. 13" when the ban expires, warns the Washington Post. In "two months Š the federal assault weapons ban dissolves like a...

NRA endorsement of Bush is on holdGun-rights group watches, waits on weapons banBy Bob Cusack An influential gun-rights group known for backing Republicans is unlikely to endorse President Bush until after the federal assault-weapons ban expires in September. Bush supports the renewal of the 10-year ban but has not called on the GOP-controlled Congress to act. If he does so, the move would probably cost him the endorsement of the National Rifle Association (NRA). Some political observers believe that the NRA's endorsement is a certainty, pointing out the group's stinging criticism of Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the presumptive Democratic presidential...
  • Sen. Larry Craig: Position on NRA board amplifies Idaho’s voice on gun issues

Recently, The Idaho Statesman took issue with legislation I sponsored in the Senate to ban a narrow range of politically driven lawsuits against the gun industry, suggesting that my membership on the board of the National Rifle Association presented a conflict of interest with my duties as a senator. As the most casual observer knows, the NRA is a stalwart defender of the individual´s right to keep and bear arms, guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the Constitution. As a senator, I take an oath of office to uphold and protect the Constitution. Fundamentally, there is no conflict between those missions.

WH Press Briefing May 8, 2003 Q Let me ask you something about the assault weapons ban. I realize the President was for the reauthorization back in 2000. Why does he support that? MR. FLEISCHER: Well, the President thought, and said so at the time in 2000, that the assault weapon ban was a reasonable step. The assault weapon ban was crafted with the thought that it would deter crime. There are still studies underway of its crime deterring abilities, but the President thought that was reasonable, and that's why he supported it. And that's why he supports the...
  • Turn Your RNC Donation Letter into a Demand to Allow the AW Ban to Expire (ctext)

With the 04 elections right around the corner, I'm sure many of us are receiving donation letters from the Republican National Committee, asking us for our hard-earned money in order to stave off the Democrat onslaught. This is all fine & good, except for one thing... with Pres. Bush's stance on the AW ban, and without any real assurances from Republican lawmakers that the ban will be allowed to wither away & die, I'm not really in the giving mood! Thus, when I received a letter in today's mail from the RNC's Treasurer Mike Retzer, I decided to enclose a...
  • Assault Weapons Ban : not any more - its way worse.

All you anti-AWB people : listen closely. The "extended" assault weapons ban would ban TONS of guns, including ALL semi-automatic shotguns, ALL shotguns that hold < 5 rounds, M1 Garand, Mini-14, ALL semi-autos that can have > 10 rounds with or without fixed magazine. Gives the attorney general the ability to declare a gun "not sporting" and subsequently ban it. That's right folks, its the big one. They want 'em all. -Still- feel playing complacent about them not taking away your guns? If this goes through, handguns are toast in <= 5 years. 30 caliber rifles next. Then, there's not...
