Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week as the recovering economy moves closer to generating more jobs. The Labor Department said Thursday that new jobless benefit claims dropped 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 439,000, nearly matching analysts' estimates. It's the fourth drop in five weeks. The four-week average of claims, which smooths volatility, fell by nearly 7,000 to 447,250, the lowest total since the week of Sept. 13, 2008, just before Lehman Brothers collapsed and the financial crisis intensified.

In response to intense public demand, and several legal challenges to his eligibity, some of which at the Supreme Court, the Obama administration will today produce the President's original birth certificate, proving his eligibility to be president of the United States as a natural born citizen, at 1pm Eastern. The preliminary reasoning given for not producing the certificate sooner has been "we just didn't feel like it before". More on this as it develops.

Jesse Jackson is planning a march this spring to protest post-hurricane policies he fears will marginalize the black community, the civil rights leader said Monday as he toured one of the city's hardest-hit areas.
