  • Conservative Nabs Name ‘American Jobs Act’ After Obama Delay (no Dem would file Obama's bill)

President Obama repeatedly asked members of Congress to pass the American Jobs Act last week. But when no Democrat filed Obama’s bill after he presented it to Congress, a conservative congressman swiped the name for his own legislation. The American Jobs Act introduced in the House of Representatives looks quite different from the version President Obama outlined in his speech to Congress. Instead of hiking taxes on working Americans to pay for another stimulus, Rep. Louie Gohmert’s (R-TX) legislation offers a tax cut. UPDATE: Gohmert’s bill now has a number. It’s HR 2911. Text of the legislation is below.

President Obama's American Jobs Act, which he presented to Congress on Monday, would make it illegal for employers to run advertisements saying that they will not consider unemployed workers, or to refuse to consider or hire people because they are unemployed. The proposed language is found in a section of the bill titled "Prohibition of Discrimination in Employment on the Basis of an Individual's Status as Unemployed." That section would also make it illegal for employers to request that employment agencies take into account a person's unemployed status. It would also allow aggrieved job-seekers to seek damages if they have...

Obama promoted his jobs bill in North Carolina on Wednesday, the third stop on what White House Press Secretary Jay Carney called a "campaign" for jobs. Not for the first time, Obama called back to an audience member's shouted, "I love you" with "I love you back." On Wednesday he added, "But if you love me you've got to help me pass this bill." The Obama administration isn't holding back in its full court campaign to pass the American Jobs Act. The WhiteHouse.gov website now includes a banner that links to the bill. Obama's speech at the North Carolina State...

At Ohio Rally, Obama Says Jobs Plan ‘Isn’t About Giving Me a Win’ One day after sending his latest jobs plan to Congress, President Obama said Republicans’ unwillingness to embrace it wholesale amounts to political “games” meant to undermine his bid for re-election. “Yesterday, there were some Republicans quoted in Washington saying that even if they agree with the proposals in the American Jobs Act they shouldn’t pass it because it would give me a ‘win,’” Obama told a crowd of 3,250 supporters at a rally outside a Columbus, Ohio, public high school. “‘Give me a win?’ This isn’t about...

House Republicans may pass bits and pieces of President Barack Obama’s jobs plan, but behind the scenes, some Republicans are becoming worried about giving Obama any victories — even on issues the GOP has supported in the past. And despite public declarations about finding common ground with Obama, some Republicans are privately grumbling that their leaders are being too accommodating with the president. “Obama is on the ropes; why do we appear ready to hand him a win?” said one senior House Republican aide who requested anonymity to discuss the matter freely. “I just don’t want to co-own the economy...

President Obama is politically insane. This is the real meaning of his speech Thursday night in front of a joint session of Congress. Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. By that definition, Mr. Obama is a lunatic leftist. Much of his speech called for more of the same - government activism; massive spending on infrastructure, bridges and roads; extending the payroll tax cut; and more public aid to states and municipalities. In short, he seeks to perpetuate the dismal policies of Obamanomics. He is a reckless ideologue masquerading as a...

Seeking to boost a slumping economy along with his hopes for re-election, President Obama unveiled his $450 billion jobs plan Thursday night in a highly-anticipated speech to a joint session of Congress. The American Jobs Act contains a blend of infrastructure spending, tax relief, unemployment assistance and other aid. All the proposals are paid for with spending cuts although the president isn’t expected to detail them until next week. “There should be nothing controversial about this piece of legislation,” Obama said in excerpts released by the White House ahead of his speech. “Everything in here is the kind of proposal...

President Obama on Thursday night will appeal to Congress to "stop the political circus" and help him get the economy moving again with a package of spending and tax cut initiatives expected to cost $447 billion. "The people of this country work hard to meet their responsibilities," Mr. Obama will say before a joint session of Congress, according to his prepared remarks. "The question tonight is whether we'll meet ours. The question is whether, in the face of an ongoing national crisis, we can stop the political circus and actually do something to help the economy." Calling his economic package...

This evening, President Obama will do more than call for job creation, he will announce he is sending legislation to Congress for quick action. “The president will unveil tonight The American Jobs Act, a plan of bipartisan ideas to create jobs right now and is fully paid for,” Communications director Dan Pfeiffer told ABC News. The final price tag is still being calculated but it could reach $400 billion, paid for by savings elsewhere in government. And it is crafted to appeal to Republicans who have control of the House, where all money bills must begin their legislative track. White...
