Denial of reality can turn hospitals into charnel houses for children’s bodies and homes into haunted houses.If the Americans Mary Margaret Olohan writes about in Detrans weren’t victims of Democrats, their plight would be all over Hollywood, “60 Minutes,” PBS, and all the rest. There’s more than enough in the stories of young Americans reverting transgender body modifications and personas to attract entire teams of investigative reporters and creatives for years. It’s at least as big as the Big Tobacco lawsuits, the abortion industry, the Oxycontin scandals, and child sex trafficking.This lack of curiosity in a deep and dramatic story...

Unlike the milquetoast SBC, which spent the last week kicking its members in the spiritual gonads by repeatedly shutting down every good amendment and resolution at their annual convention, members at the Presbyterian Church in America’s annual convention did the Lord’s work by approving a resolution that would investigate the impact and influence of Sarah Young’s egregiously awful book “Jesus Calling,” setting the stage for it to be potentially banned. This is welcome news! Published in 2004 by the now-deceased Sarah Young, a member of the PCA, Jesus Calling has 45 million copies in print. It is one of the...

Reading with Book Scanners & Macular Degeneration

I've got some mild macular degeneration (early 70s) that is making it hard to read. I've got a "pucker" on my right retina that causes some mild distortion which makes it hard to read. The images from the left and right eye don't line up perfectly anymore. My retina specialist doctor says he can operate on the retina to improve the problem, but he can't say for certain what the outcome would be. There's always a risk of any surgery and in this case it could be losing the affected eye. Also, recurrence of the problem in a few years...

Like the German church in the 1930s, the American church in the 2020s is culpable for the pending devastation of human life and the collapse of a great nation. Comparisons could not be more compelling as proffered in “Letter to the American Church” by New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas. “Letter to the American Church” is a culmination of Mr. Metaxas’ in-depth understanding of the decline and fall of Germany under the Third Reich, especially as seen through the life and activity of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Mr. Metaxas draws on his research from his previous bestselling biographies on Bonhoeffer, William...

Latter-Day Saint filmmakers are planning a new TV series inspired by ‘The Chosen’, except instead of featuring Jesus in the Gospels, it will feature characters and stories from the Book of Mormon. According to the promo material, the TV series The Promised, created by Ashley Troncoso, “aims to unite faith-based and secular audiences through the highest-quality scripture series ever made” by having similar production values as Dallas Jenkin’s mega-hit Jesus show. Described as a story “as inspired as The Chosen, as epic as The Lord of the Rings, and as gritty as Apocalypto,” the series will take place “600 years...

[Catholic Caucus] The Bible is a 'love letter' says Francis in preface for Fr. James Martin's bookPope Francis has written a preface for the Italian edition of Come Forth: The Promise of Jesus's Greatest Miracle, a book by Jesuit Fr. James Martin. Originally published in the U.S. in September 2023, Martin's work delves into the story of the resurrection of Lazarus, which he dubs "Jesus's greatest miracle." The pope's preface not only highlights the themes of the book, but also offers a glimpse into his own theological and pastoral perspectives."I was surprised, delighted and of course very grateful. It was...

There was some amusement as well as surprise when somebody walked into Helsinki’s Oodi Central Library on Monday 27 with a book that was overdue. 84 years overdue It’s not unusual to be a little delayed in returning a library book but this one was unusual in as much as it was due back on December 26, 1939 making it just over 84 years late! The person who returned it isn’t the person who first took out the book The Refugees (Pakolaiset in Finnish) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and it is not known whether there was a fine and...

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Because of a national agenda, and far right outrage, dozens of "questionable" books have been removed from library shelves in Idaho over the last couple of years. More than twenty in Nampa schools, ten in West Ada Schools, to name a couple high-profile instances. This was before Idaho lawmakers decided to put a possible fine on libraries. Where a child who checks out such material, or if it's not removed, they and their parents could sue the library for $250, plus damages. In both public and school libraries. So, to avoid any hassle, a lot of libraries...

‘The Stripping of the Altars’, 30 years on {review of book by Eamon Duffy}

In the early 1980s, three unrelated events converged to turn my attention decisively to the late Middle Ages and the Reformation. I was invited to give a lecture on the Book of Common Prayer Burial Service. I decided to tackle this task by comparing the elaborate medieval Latin burial service with the austerely Protestant rite Cranmer had quarried from it: the realisation that, in the medieval service at the moment of committal of the corpse, the priest addressed the dead person directly, whereas in the Prayer Book rite the minister turned instead to the living mourners round the grave...

The conventional wisdom among “progressives” is that black Americans must be given preferences in college admissions, hiring, and government contracting because the nation is so suffused with racism that they cannot advance otherwise. There are many problems with that view, and in her book The Adversity of Diversity Carol Swain explores them. As a black woman who grew up in impoverished conditions in rural Virginia, Swain has a compelling case to make against the idea that preferences actually help blacks. Her success in life is a strong counter to the leftist racial agenda, and she argues that it makes matters...

Editor’s note: Shillman Fellow Daniel Greenfield has written a powerful new book, Domestic Enemies: The Founding Fathers’ Fight Against The Left. Highly original and urgently relevant, Domestic Enemies unveils the hypocrisies and destructive schemes of the Left, revealing that it has been trying to destroy America from its very founding – using many of the same tactics that it employs today.Democrats claim Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson were the fathers of their party. The truth is that their party started out as a radical leftist movement set up by supporters of the French Revolution to seize power in America.Learn why...

The end of an era: Whatever happened to the phone book?

Alas, the poor phone book. Once, it was the cornerstone of American connection, an indispensable resource people relied on to find pizza shops, plumbers, and the number of the cute girl in math class. But now, when a new phone book lands on a homeowner’s doorstep, the tome most often gets tossed in the recycling bin. They might be used to press flowers, or as a booster seat or a door stop, but fewer and fewer phone books are used for what they were originally intended, to look up telephone numbers.

A Utah school has sparked fury after removing the name of a student who died of cancer just months before graduation - despite completing all requirements. Samantha Corey, who was battling a rare and terminal form of the disease, passed away before she could finish her senior year at American Fork High School. As Samantha's siblings prepared to stand in her place, they were told by the district they wouldn't be permitted. Her name was also omitted from the ceremony. It wasn't like we were wanting special treatment for her,' Kimberly Corey, Samantha's mother, said to FOX13. 'I just think...

A California dad has blasted his son's school for giving the child a book about a transgender boy - then allegedly forcing him to explain it to kindergartners. Carlos Encinas' 11-year-old son was assigned to read a book called 'My Shadow is Pink' in his fifth-grade class on May 1 at La Costa Heights Elementary School in Carlsbad north of San Diego. The book centers around a boy who describes his father's shadow as 'big' and 'blue' and his dilemma with his own shadow, which he feels is pink. 'My heart skips a beat as I put on a dress,'...

Ex-White House press secretary Jen Psaki is being forced to retract a false claim in her new book that President Biden did not check his watch during the dignified transfer of 13 US troops killed in the Afghanistan withdrawal. In her May 2024 tome “Say More,” Psaki attacked her former boss’s critics, who she said seized on the callous moment to make “him appear insensitive, concerned only about how much time had passed,” claiming he “only looked at his watch after the ceremony had ended.” Axios first reported on the book’s inaccuracy. Photos, videos and media fact-checkers at the time...
