Brian Mulroney — who, as Canada's 18th prime minister, steered the country through a tumultuous period in national and world affairs — has died. He was 84. His daughter Caroline Mulroney shared the news Thursday afternoon on social media. "On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada's 18th Prime Minister. OTTAWA — Flora MacDonald, who served as a senior cabinet member in two Conservative federal governments and made a run for the party’s leadership in 1976, has died. She was 89. MacDonald’s long-time executive assistant Margit Herrman says MacDonald died in Ottawa this morning — the cause of death was not immediately available. MacDonald was the first woman to hold the foreign affairs portfolio in Joe Clark’s government from 1979 to 1980. She was heading the department during the Iranian hostage crisis when Canadian diplomats gave shelter to six Americans who escaped capture when their embassy was overrun.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A top Pakistani official says that 84 students have been killed in a Taliban attack on a military-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar. Pervez Khattak, the chief minister of the province where the attack is underway, says that roughly the same number of students have been wounded. According to Khattak, the 84 killed in the Tuesday attack were all "children" but hospital officials earlier said at least one of the fatalities was a teacher and one security official were also among the dead. Khattak says the fighting is still unfolding at the school.
