A lot of people can’t “halt kup” (Yiddish for hold their head.... follow) Ezekiel.

Zeke here is a David midrash I’m sure you’ve seen.

Thanks. That's always a great page for being a "total round up" of the "illegitimate" David midrashim.

What caused King David to face such an intense ignominy, to be shunned by his own brothers in his home ("I have become a stranger to my brothers"), by the Torah sages who sat in judgment at the gates ("those who sit by the gate talk about me") and by the drunkards on the street corners ("I am the taunt of drunkards")? What had King David done to arouse such ire and contempt?

From another article:

Even before King David became king he was known as "the final verdict."8 King Saul, his predecessor, was brilliant, but the halachah was determined according to David. We know that David was very humble; he is called "the servant of the L-rd" and "My servant David."9

Here's a useful hybrid of the ealier Pirkei Avot text:

רבי שמעון אומרשלשה
crowns: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of royalty, but the crown of a good name supersedes them all. <<<

So he sent for him and had him brought. He was of ruddy complexion with red hair, beautiful eyes, and handsome to look at.

G-d said: "Rise up, anoint him, for this is the one!"

A lot of people can't "halt kup" (Yiddish for hold their head.... follow) Ezekiel.

It's strange, because it's not like I'm trying to prove any theories or doctrines, and then people would need to follow complex and/or sketchy lines of reasoning. Interpretations belong to God.

I merely go along documenting whatever it is I happen to observe.

As such,

Good Morning!

How are ya?

As HaRav Ginsburgh would say, it's a beautiful example of interinclusion.

It's like what's on the [Aug 2023 street view] sign at the bus "sukkah" for 17B and 17G:

"Donate Your Boat"
[boat or tov, בוט or טוב]. 17.

(Ever experience a burning forehead? It could even spread to the temples. This fire occurred 8-9 Aug, but it's dated here as "Tisha B'Aug"..)

***

Over many, many years, I have found myself referring back to this next page innumerable times for all kinds of reasons. Yet mainly it's on account of the "typo" at the outset. I've wondered if the author (Author?) meant to do that, for all of the trails shooting off of it:

Joseph From the Kabbalistic Perspective

It opens with

As we have already seen, early on Joseph is linked to the fulfillment of Jacob's legacy.

These are the generations of Jacob, Joseph was seventeen years old ...[Genesis 37:2]

At the outset, the Torah connects Jacob with Joseph. Of all his sons specifically Joseph holds the key to not only Jacob's but the family's ission. In this Torah portion, we will examine the implications of that mission from the mystical -- that is Kabbalistic -- standpoint. To do so, we must go back to the point where all it first began:

Trailheads. Think of the possibilities. Just off-hand, there's permission, fission, transmission... (it's not what you think)

Genesis 37
19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

Joseph had been sold down the river. It's not just a river in Egypt. There's always hope, however, because Mr. Sandman (Ish HaChol, איש החול, the chutz la'aretz man), is the "lord of dreams", and Egypt is world-famous for all of its treasures discovered and yet to be discovered in the sands of time.

A Hebrew equivalent to dream on is אתה חי בסרט to a male, and את חיה בסרט to a female -- literally, you're living in a movie. It can be used not only as a refusal of an offer, but also as a way of giving the person you're speaking with a reality check -- get real.

how to say "dream on" in Hebrew

"Isn't he a dreamboat?"

Which brings me to the epiphany I had only yesterday about the one word that really, truly, and finally fits:

ADMission

Because... so much is included in the price of admission (All Seats 50c).

Not wanting to miss an angle, I first tossed "admission" into Google Translate to see what the default result (and the rest) would be:

הוֹדָאָה
Noun
admission confession acknowledgment consent avowal
See dictionary

Does that not look familiar from the mention of

...the Octagrammaton (יאהדונהי), the “fused” eight-letter name of God which combines the Ineffable Tetragrammaton, Yud-Hei-Vav-Hei, with Adonai. This special name represents the fusion of Heaven and Earth, since the Tetragrammaton is the Heavenly name that is unpronounced, while Adonai is the way we refer to God on Earth below. When combined, it forms a “bridge” between the realms.

The gematria of the Octagrammaton is 91, a number which represents that fusion of Heaven and Earth. This is why, for instance, the value of sukkah (סוכה) is 91, as the sukkah is the place where one can experience the Heavenly Clouds of Glory here on Earth. The same number is the value of “angel” (מלאך), for angels are those beings that bridge Heaven and Earth and freely move between these realms.

Thanksgiving wine, spilling the secrets of the universe:

Wine [in Hebrew "yayin"] comes from a hidden place; therefore its numerical value is 70, which is the same as the word "secret" [in Hebrew, "sod"]. (Chidushei Aggadah, Sanhedrin)

יאהדונהי
יאהדונהי

Klein's:

הוֹדָאָה f.n. PBH 1 admission, acknowledgment. 2 thanksgiving. 3 benediction of thanksgiving in the ‘Tephillah’. [Verbal n. of הוֹדָה, Hiph. of ידה ᴵ. For the ending see first suff. ◌ָה. cp. הוֹדָיָה. cp. also הוֹדוֹת.]

Thanksgiving? Yeah, for real. That was even the theme for Gary Granger's vision in Addams Family Values, "A Turkey Named Brotherhood".

Wednesday had already warned him that his work was puerile and under-dramatized, and that he lacked any sense of structure, character and the Aristotelian unities.

Therefore, the lowly, Can-Do outcasts used the play to take care of business, as seen in that link to his vision. Poor Joel. You can watch how his mother kvetched, "20 grand for summer camp, and he's Mr. Woo-Woo."

Now about Sarah's apple...

It seems that there are two terms that could be broadly translated as "gratitude", which each express different aspects of the concept. הכרת הטוב denotes recognition, while הודאה has strong echoes of active admission. I know that both are brought up in the literature, even co-occurring in רש"י's comment on the birth and naming of יהודה. Does anyone explicitly contrast the two concepts of gratitude?

>>>

We can be grateful for the apple. Or, we can be grateful that Hashem made it possible for people to plant the tree, sell it to the wholesaler, provide the means for an open market in apples, all the many elements that go into my wife finding it in a store display, her loving me and wanting me to have something to enjoy and eat healthier, and her buying it for me. Notice how, by spelling out the detail, one realizes more fully the greatness of the tov. The closer we look, the larger it looms.

It's not just the movies. There's all that dreaming going on in famous verses and their songs. They are the ones that everybody knows because they are here, there, and everywhere:

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep, everything is all right"

Roy Orbison Performs His Classic In Dreams

(Recall that a dream is 1/60 of prophecy, and sleep is 1/60 of death... small tastes of)

Well, if you want to make me cry that won't be so hard to do
If you should say goodbye, I'll still go on loving you
Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love?

A Teenager In Love-Dion and The Belmonts-Original Song

Is a shiur 1/60 of Redemption? If it isn't, perhaps it ought to be.

Not famous, but here's the same sentiment that had originated with the Mavericks, a cappella:

Floating down a dream river
With the moon and stars above
Maybe they can help me find
A way to have your love

Sleeping in the darkest room
Dreaming you are in my arms
Oh how I wish my dream comes true
With all my heart..

Ringmasters - Dream river

Of course there are the musicals, movies built upon the very framework of their songs.

Who doesn't recall what the Reverend Mother had instructed:

Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow*
'Till you find your dream

A dream that will need
All the love you can give
Every day of your life
For as long as you live

Sound of Music - Climb Every Mountain

*The leprechaun is said to be a solitary creature, whose principal occupation is making and cobbling shoes, and who enjoys practical jokes.

(Now if that wily little fellow isn't ADMoni personified, who is?)

Isn't that so often the way with transliterations? A בוט is also a boot 🎿.

Ruth 4
7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.

Still with me?

You know what this means, don't you? It'll just keep on up until it finally it dawns on someboby to cry "Uncle" ["דוד!"].

Ringmasters - I got life

(That's Jakob for the lead vocals. Emanuel is the baritone, the second from the left.)

Those wild and crazy Swedes! The crowd went nuts when Emanuel became The King. What an intro:

"And I know no other person that can do a better job at raising spirits than our baritone." ~ Jakob

"If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." -- George McFly

Full circle.

Today, the practice is to extend the Hakafot of Simchat Torah and bring singing and dancing with the Torah scrolls throughout the synagogue. All of the Torah scrolls are taken from the Ark, and members of the congregation circle the reader’s platform seven times or more as they carry the Torah scroll with them and say the Piuyt "God of the winds, save us now" (אלוהי הרוחות הושיע נא).

God of ... אלוהי <---> אליהו

Did anyone notice that the very first replies to this thread involved Elijah? What, was he going to appear in.. Burke [ברק]? Then again, a lightning strike sure moves along a lot faster than anything I have to say.

It struck me as a tad unusual because where was Elijah in all of this? It prompted me to reread through the data and links, but I didn't see Elijah mentioned anywhere.

Obviously somebody is way more observant than I am.

Gotta laugh.

"Dreams are the buds of prophecy."

You have to get to the bottom [of those eclipse pages] to see that in every case,

An Eclipse Never Comes Alone!

October 14, 2023 — Great American Eclipse (Annular Solar Eclipse)

(synonym for eclipse: transcend)

Who knows 50? The distinguished number of transcendence.
