Kremlin Hopes Hagia Sophia's Global Significance, Sacred Value to be Accounted for in Determining its Status in Turkey

Moscow, July 6, Interfax - Moscow expects the Turkish authorities to take into account the fact that the Hagia Sophia is a masterpiece of global art and has sacred value when making a decision as to its status, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"Undoubtedly, we hope that the Hagia Sophia's status as a world heritage site will be taken into account. Of course, it's a favorite international masterpiece for tourists from all countries visiting Turkey, including tourists coming from Russia. And in addition to its tourism value, the Hagia Sophia has a very profound sacred value," Peskov told journalists on Monday.

"Of course, we hope that our Turkish counterparts will take all that into account," he said.

At the same time, "we cannot comment on the decision itself; this is a domestic matter of the Republic of Turkey," Peskov said. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and Russia earlier voiced the Russian Orthodox Church's opinion on the issue, he said. "You know that our patriarch has already made a statement about this, expressing the Church's opinion," Peskov said.

Hagia Sophia. An amazing piece of architecture. Completed in 537 AD. 800 years before Norte Dame. At that time, there was nothing to rival it except for the pyramids of Ancient Egypt.

It was made into a mosque by the Ottomans after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. It became a museum in the late 20’s or early 30’s.

Hagia Sophia. An amazing piece of architecture.

And what did the invading Turks add to it? Ugly minarets. Like painting devils’ horns on the Mona Lisa.

A war was fought for this ground way, way back. Another was fought not so way back. The turks are the undisputed winners. The land and all therein belongs to them to do with as they see fit. That is the way of determining borders and ownership since the beginning of time.

Very similar to another area due south of Turkey that receives much pressure from the world to “give it back.”
