Californians are still free to attend their house of worship. But they’re forbidden from singing or chanting.
Updated COVID-19 guidelines issued Wednesday by the state Department of Public Health require churches and other houses of worship to “discontinue singing and chanting activities.”
In previously allowing religious organizations to reopen in late May, the state merely said these institutions should “strongly consider discontinuing singing, group recitation, and other practices and performances.”
Health agencies such as the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say shouting or singing can spread the coronavirus just as easily as coughing or sneezing.
California’s health department agrees, and as Gov. Gavin Newsom begins tightening protocols during a resurgence of the pandemic, it now says singing and chanting are outright banned.
“Activities such as singing and chanting negate the risk reduction achieved through six feet of physical distancing,” the state said in its new guidelines.

SACRAMENTO, CA—In a solemn ceremony today, Governor Gavin Newsom of California dedicated a lions’ den for Christians who sing in church against the government’s orders.
Newsom’s advisers had approached him and suggested the move. “May Governor Newsom live forever!” they said, bowing prostrate before him. “We, your humble advisers, have all agreed that you should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who sings to any god, except SCIENCE or Black Lives Matter, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.”
Governor Newsom thought about it and said, “OK. Shall we pass a law or something?”
“No, you just declare it. That’s how democracy works, dummy.”
“Alright.”
So he did. “By order of royal decree, anyone who worships any god other than SCIENCE shall be thrown into the lions’ den!”
California Worship Enforcement Officers began rounding up offenders to throw into the lions’ den.
“You’re a good, good, FaAAAAHHHHH!!!” cried one worship leader in Southern California as he was tased and pulled off the stage by officers. The congregation wanted to rush to his defense, but they were honestly kinda happy “Good, Good Father” was over.
Fortunately, the lions were on loan from the San Franscisco Zoo and so were vegans.

Newsom has banned all Christians from singing in church.
Literally the entire Byzantine Catholic /Orthodox Divine Liturgy is sung or chanted. Being liturgical - sacramental Churches, such services are considered essential. Actually, thinking clearly about it, more essential than earthly life, more essential than the physical Universe. Newsom effectively outlawed all Eastern Christian “services” in California, and the actual worshipers have banned (themselves) from thinking too hard about it.
