Priest Faces Backlash for Asking Women to Dress Modestly at Mass: ‘You Can’t Be Serious’

A Catholic priest took to Twitter to ask women to dress modestly for church services to “protect the purity of the men”— and people online are not having it.

Father Kevin M. Cusick, an ordained Catholic priest and veteran, wrote a tweet addressed to “ladies,” writing that a fellow priest was “forced” to ask a woman at a Catholic mass to cover her shoulders. Cusick went on ask women to “please help the priest to protect the purity of men at holy Mass by choosing to dress modestly.”

Cusick added, “The alternative is awkward for all involved. Thank you.”

Ladies, a priest I know was forced on Sunday to ask a woman at Mass to cover her shoulders. Please help the priest to protect the purity of the men at holy Mass by choosing to dress modestly. The alternative is awkward for all involved. Thank you. — Fr. Kevin M. Cusick, LCDR (Ret.) ✝️ (@MCITLFrAphorism) June 3, 2019

The tweet faced almost immediate backlash, with both men and women arguing that women shouldn’t have to cover up their bodies to protect the sensibilities of their male counterparts while attending a church service.

“A woman's shoulders are not provocative. Women's bodies are not grenades, liable to explode at any moment,” replied Australian novelist Jane Caro, adding that this is why she “hates organized religion.”

While all the comments here may be true and the priest right in theory, it is not his place to go about improving female dress.

1. The women who do dress that way will only be defiant.

2. On twitter, please! His method’s disrespectful to all involved. Maybe have a respected older woman talk privately to the lady, or some less bombastic method.

3. If a man is distracted by shoulders, that is understandable... but it’s his job to change his seat.

In Korea the women still wear veils to church (Catholic and Anglican). I actually thought that was great.

I don’t think it was the shoulders that were the problem, she was probably poured into a tube top that was a distraction. Why the backlash? If they don’t want to be modest, goto another Church

*** Obviously you don’t go to church in June, July, or August in Phoenix, AZ. ***

I’ve been to St Anne’s in Gilbert. The Priest made a snarky comment about my chapel veil, and tugged on it. I didn’t reply. I gave him the hot eye. He then said, “But, it’s okay”.

Well the weather in June, July and August runs 100-115. Wearing a sleeveless shirt by a woman at a worship service is not immodest.

I believe one of the main purposes of the Burka is to cover most of a woman lest exposure of any part cause uncontrollable lust in a Muslim man. Since Western men are accustomed to routinely seeing more of a woman exposed without being overcome by lust, I don’t think the priest’s caution was necessary.

“They really know how to bring Saturday night to Sunday morning. Lol! I’m not complaining, I’m just saying ;p”

We’re dudes and Christian too. The Lord knows we get bored with the same message at mass and we sometimes need to “relax” haha. It’s natural and God-given to check out attractive women.

My mom knew why I liked going to mass when she said “I know you’ve been looking at Shirley and Rachel and I know their mothers so pay attention to Fr. Pete’s sermon ok?” XD

Aren’t Christians always supposed to dress modestly, for the particular situation? Obviously, you’re not going to wear a three piece suit to the beach.

When I see women in church dressed like hookers, I agree with the priest. It’s disgusting how inappropriately many women dress in church. Church is not the place to dress provocatively.

And the worst part of it is the overweight behemoths who wear skimpy clothing as if they were Melania. Some clothes and styles just should not be made in certain sizes.

Too many women look like overstuffed sausages with off the shoulder dresses and above the knee skirt length. some women have no shame.

I really find it hypocritical when women dress sexy to attract the attention of men, then complain that they have attracted the attention of men. Our fallen human nature is what it is, and simple charity should dictate that we do nothing to unnecessarily tempt others into sin.

But, but, but, that would mean thinking of someone besides themselves!!!!!

And that old fashioned thing...... remember.....? It was called "common courtesy", IIRC.

We live in a sloth society now. Slobs in school, church, work, nice restaurants etc is the norm. There is a correlation between how people dress themselves and how they feel and represent themselves.

3. If a man is distracted by shoulders, that is understandable... but it’s his job to change his seat.

Nonsense.

Anyone who names the name of Christ is to consider others before themselves and knowing that men tend to be weak in the area of sexual temptation, it's the WOMAN'S responsibility to dress appropriately and modestly. If the man STILL had problems, then he has problems. But women should not be dressing like hookers to attract men's attention, and then complain when they get it.

And trust me, women DO dress to entice men in that manner and they know what they are doing.

You don't dress that sexy to impress the other females.

Women dress provocatively deliberately. They do know what they are doing and therefore are responsible to not do it in certain circumstances.

I remember when it was scandalous to wear blue jeans to Sunday service but nowadays you’re more likely to see denim.

We women should dress modestly in church. Stop with the cleavage and short short or split skirts. I dress nicely when I go to church, not extravagant or trying to show off or anything. I go to a very conservative fundamentalist church, and some of the women wouldn’t think of wearing anything the least bit colorful, no jewelry or make-up. But I wear both, and if it offends anyone, they’ve never told me. I usually wear slacks. To me, I would think a woman in a skirt would be more attractive to men than one wearing slacks, if I judge by my husband’s feelings.

Believe it or not, the Catholic Church has a dress code. No bare shoulders means no cleavage, halter tops, spaghetti straps. Also no shorts, and no pants for women. People tell me this is fully enforced in Rome although that was before Francis. Many rural parishes in my diocese offer shawls for offenders, and believe it or not, by Church law, you can be refused Communion if you’re not dressed modestly. You come to church to worship the Most High God, not yourself, so COVER IT, girls!!!

I’ll translate: women dress sexy to attract the attention of desirable Alpha Males. They get offended when men of lesser desirability presume that the woman might be interested in them.

Women need to dress modestly. Even I am distracted by spaghetti strap dress or short shorts/skirts at Mass.

This is not Sunday best dressing — remember, ladies, you are meeting Jesus at Mass. He see what you look like.

sadly, when women dress trashy even in church they're playing into the hands of lecherous men, as evident in this thread.....

when I was a kid, women wore dresses to church with a head covering of some kind and men wore suits and the boys who weren't in the choir or altar boys dressed up with a nice shirt and tie.....

how I remember the nuns having a collection of ties for the boys who forgot to wear them to school for First Friday services and also a collection of mantillas for the girls...the good old days......
