If the churches would really try to deal with these problems quickly when they arise, there would be far far less need for secular government interference or involvement. Which while sometimes necessary or at least understandable - csn do a church great harm imho.

The real deal here is that Pell was doing a great job fixing the Vatican Bank mess when he stepped on the toes of little fiefdoms who complained to Frankie.

Frankie decided who was more important and it wasn't the guy cleaning up the mess but the ones causing the economic mess.

What does that say about Frankie?

In order to make the Pell problem go away he got sent back to Australia to face unfounded charges of sexual misconduct.

There´s plenty to shame and blame in the Catholic hierarchy --- and I could list some, but it would take me days --- but I´ll go on record that in THIS particular case, I think we´re seeing a set-up.

Pell was investigated on this three times, tried twice. (I don´t know how this works out in Australian law, but there it is.) First investigation found insufficient reason to bring charges, second rdsulted in charges and a hung jury, His lawyer says there is absolute proof that it would have been impossible for Pell to have committed the crimes, but is not allowed to discuss the evidence because of a "suppression" order. (So, really, no "swoft, public trial" since it was decades later, and held in secrecy.

Oh, and... Pell, while tasked with cleaning up the Vatican´s tangled finances, had hired a major accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, to do a thorough impartal investigation. Within months PWC´s investigation was permanently suspended by Pope Francis and the Australians mysteriously renewed these "historic charges" on which Pell had already been tried and not found guilty.

Some of the higher hierarch have been shielded under the aegis of "diplomatic immunity" or somesuch, Some real felons. But Pope Francis had Pell shipped back to Auatralia as fast as you could say "Adios."

I think asking for "married priests" is barking up the wrong tree, since the is nothing to prevent a married man from being a predator. Dr. Alfred Kinsey was married. Roman Polanski is married. Bill Cosby is married. Jerry Sandusky was -- as previously noted --- married,

The "unmarried state" does not cause or enhance predatory behavior; and the "married state" does not prevent predatory behavior.

Do you think being a priest is a good "cover" for being a perv? Being married is an even better one.

And did you ever notice that virtually all the female public school teachers who hook up with underage boy students, are married, with children?

According to a 2007 article in the Insurance Journal, the three companies that insure the majority of Protestant churches in America say they typically receive upward of 260 reports each year of young people under 18 being sexually abused under Protestant church "auspices", and almost all the perps were married.

It has long been thus. Oscar Wilde was married (to Constance Wilde) and had two sons. And even when he had not only a normal wife but also a steady "Beau" (Lord Alfred Douglas) he still went for under-age stable boys, servant's sons, "rent boys" at the club.
