Singapore churches urge prayers for peace as Trump-Kim summit nears

SINGAPORE – With President Trump and Kim Jong Un preparing to come together for a monumental summit next week, Christians here spent their Sunday praying that the upcoming meeting would contribute to lasting peace and stability throughout the Korean peninsula and rest of the world.

During an early morning service at St. Andrews Cathedral, an Anglican church just miles away from the venue for Tuesday's bilateral discussion, visiting Rev. Alvin Toh urged the parish to pray that "good will and diplomacy prevail" as Trump and Kim come together to discuss denuclearization and a possible peace treaty to end the Korean War.

"Ask God to direct the course of the talks towards concrete outcomes for world peace," Toh said, calling for prayers of "protection on security matters" and for those who have been involved in preparing the city for the two leaders ahead of their separate arrivals Sunday evening.

Toh's request came a day after the Catholic Archbishop of Singapore William Goh urged his parishioners in a Facebook post to keep Trump and Kim in their prayers.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

All churches should be doing this! Where is the Pope’s prayer?

People don’t generally know that about 70% of Singapore is made up of Chinese Christians. Hindu and Malay Muslims make up the rest. At Christmastime, you see huge banners saying Merry Christmas everywhere.

70% Chinese, true, but many of them are Buddhist or animist. Still, your point is essentially right: there is a very significant Christian presence in Singapore - probably more than in any other Asian county except South Korea.

No muslims? That would explain the prosperity.

They have Malay Muslims (15%) but they recognize how lucky they are to be Singapore citizens and are docile. Those jihadists that dare to speak out seem to subsequently disappear without a trace. :)

Thanks. You re right. I looked it up and found that the share of Singaporeans who are Christians has been steadily rising. It was 12.7% in 1990, 14.6% in 2000, 18% in the 2015 census. When I was there one Christmas, however, you’d think you were in Jolly Old England celebration a Victorian Christmas — except no snow.

Even the non-Christians there love the Santa Claus/gift giving/decorations aspects of Christmas. It’s a huge holiday in Singapore - and since the island is basically a giant underground mall with high-rises on top, the retailers are very happy with that. :)
