But -- as metmom might remember - I have been one of the biggest critics of the abuses of modern day prophesy in the charismatic and Pentecostal churches, and I do so as a charismatic Pentecostal, who functions in the full gifts of the Spirit.

Please explain what you mean by your functioning "in the full gifts of the Spirit". We know from Scripture that NO ONE receives every gift:

Brothers and sisters, I want you to know about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. You know that at one time you were unbelievers. You were somehow drawn away to worship statues of gods that couldn’t even speak. So I want you to know that no one who is speaking with the help of God’s Spirit says, “May Jesus be cursed.” And without the help of the Holy Spirit no one can say, “Jesus is Lord.” There are different kinds of gifts. But they are all given to believers by the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve. But they all come from the same Lord. There are different ways the Spirit works. But the same God is working in all these ways and in all people. The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all. To some people the Spirit gives a message of wisdom. To others the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge. To others the same Spirit gives faith. To others that one Spirit gives gifts of healing. To others he gives the power to do miracles. To others he gives the ability to prophesy. To others he gives the ability to tell the spirits apart. To others he gives the ability to speak in different kinds of languages they had not known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages. All the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. He gives gifts to each person, just as he decides...

You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it. First, God has placed apostles in the church. Second, he has placed prophets in the church. Third, he has placed teachers in the church. Then he has given to the church miracles and gifts of healing. He also has given the gift of helping others and the gift of guiding the church. God also has given the gift of speaking in different kinds of languages. Is everyone an apostle? Is everyone a prophet? Is everyone a teacher? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in languages they had not known before? Do all explain what is said in those languages? But above all, you should want the more important gifts. But now I will show you the best way of all.(I Cor. 12:1-11; 27-31 (NIRV))

Some Pentecostals/Charismatics have asserted that unless one speaks in tongues, he/she ISN'T baptized by the Holy Spirit. Do you believe that, too?

Some Pentecostals/Charismatics assert that the gift of tongues is for the believer in order to "pray in the Spirit". Does that mean someone who doesn't have the gift of tongues cannot pray in the Spirit?. What do you say?

You are confusing positional gifts and gifts of the spirit. Personally, I function in the full gifts of the Spirit appropriated to me...

... and use them whenever I can to alert the saints to the problem of counterfeits, familiar spirits and liars of the NAR false prophetic movement. It drives those people crazy, cause I know their game and how they slaughter true faith in believers’ lives.

It’s just a manner of speaking to say I believe the gifts are for today.

Are we to take what Paul said, that “all are to be ambitious to prophesy” as the idea that we can obtain more giftings from God as our faith grows?

I don’t know the answer to this.

But to deny tongues for example, would be denying that the Word of God is true, that John’s disciples didn’t really speak in tongues or that Peter himself didn’t speak in another language that day of Pentecost.

(It’s called Peter’s “this is that” speech. This is that of which the Prophet Joel prophesied... that God will pour out His spirit on all mankind... etc.)

Who are we to dismiss the idea that these gifts, positional and functional, were somehow only relegated to the 1st Century Jewish believers and converted Gentiles to Christ among them?

Nuts to that nonsense. The Lord requires us to be fully equipped by the purposing and unction of His Holy Spirit to face this evil day.

P.S. Corrected the above sentence and I think I answered your questions in the above thread.

Tongues IS NOT a sign of being born again or spirit filled, but the Bible makes it clear that some will have the gift and so evidence of it cannot be denied or wished away, either.

I knew someone who was born again, and told Christ she did not want to speak in tongues, and instead felt a “strong, hot wind” blow through her living room when she prayed this prayer.

The Lord is a gentleman who will never overpower our free will!

I have had 2 or 3 tell me, one cannot even be saved, unless one speaks in tongues. I don’t know how widespread that feeling is, however. I don’t buy it.

Well; the Book sure does NOT say that!

We know from Scripture that NO ONE receives every gift:

Likewise...

We know from Scripture that EVERYONE does NOT receive ONE gift:
