Bishop Denies Sen. Dick Durbin Communion Over His Pro-Abortion Voting Record

One of the great hypocrisies of our time is the number of pro-abortion senators and congressmen who also claim to be Roman Catholic. Being pro-abortion and Roman Catholic is like being pro-LGBTQ rights and Muslim. Both sets are a contradiction of terms. Thankfully, the bishop of Senator Dick Durbin's (D-Ill.) diocese recognizes this contradiction of terms and is denying the senator communion until he repents of his grave sin.

Senator Durbin's office has yet to comment on the matter, but his views on abortion are well known. Last year, Durbin insisted in a CNN interview that Democrats who are personally pro-life must be "prepared to back the law, Roe vs. Wade, prepared to back women's rights as we've defined them under the law." Continuing, the senator asserted, "I am committed to women's rights under the law, reproductive rights certainly, and our party is. We've made that part of our platform and position for a long, long time."

Most recently, Senator Durbin voted to deny babies who are at least twenty weeks old their right to life. That vote is what prompted Bishop Thomas John Paprocki to issue the following statement:

"Fourteen Catholic senators voted against the bill that would have prohibited abortions starting at 20 weeks after fertilization, including Sen. Richard Durbin, whose residence is in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. In April 2004, Sen. Durbin’s pastor, then Msgr. Kevin Vann (now Bishop Kevin Vann of Orange, CA), said that he would be reticent to give Sen. Durbin Holy Communion because his pro-abortion position put him outside of communion or unity with the Church’s teachings on life. My predecessor, now Archbishop George Lucas of Omaha, said that he would support that decision. I have continued that position."

Continuing the press release, Bishop Paprocki explains:

"Canon 915 of the Catholic Church’s Code of Canon Law states that those “who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.” In our 2004 Statement on Catholics in Political Life, the USCCB said, “Failing to protect the lives of innocent and defenseless members of the human race is to sin against justice. Those who formulate law therefore have an obligation in conscience to work toward correcting morally defective laws, lest they be guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning against the common good.” Because his voting record in support of abortion over many years constitutes “obstinate persistence in manifest grave sin,” the determination continues that Sen. Durbin is not to be admitted to Holy Communion until he repents of this sin. This provision is intended not to punish, but to bring about a change of heart. Sen. Durbin was once pro-life. I sincerely pray that he will repent and return to being pro-life."

While we can (and should) pray that Senator Durbin will heed the bishop's words and repent, withholding communion is probably going to be to no avail. Senator Durbin has consistently demonstrated during his time in office that he's more beholden to power and the Democratic Party than he is to the teachings of his own professed religion.

"Bishop Denies Sen. Dick Durbin Communion Over His Pro-Abortion Voting Record"

That's what a Missouri Synod Lutheran church did when its member, Demonicrat Senator Paul Simon, supported abortion in the 90s.

Oh wait. No they didn't! And none of the Missouri Synod leadership, who publicly opposed abortion, called the congregation or the pastor to account. And when Simon died in 2003, they all gave him a big eulogy.

RCINC is the oldest most profitable multinational corporation on the planet.

Oldest (extant) I might agree with. Not very profitable on a per-capita basis at all. In terms of asset dollars per member, the Mormon church is far, far richer. Of course Mormons (in good standing) are required to tithe. Catholics are merely exhorted to tithe.

I don't think it's a "financial" decision in the strict sense at all. I think you might be surprised at how little Pelosi or the Kennedys actually put in the collection plate.

Rather:

All of this kind of misses the point, I think, which is that it's actually a requirement of the virtue of charity not to permit a manifest, public, grave sinner like Nancy Pelosi to eat and drink condemnation upon herself.

As ironic as it may sound, I think the real charge to be levied against the bishops is that they don't love Nancy Pelosi enough, enough to tell her to stop earning her own damnation before God's altar.

There’s a so-called Catholic church up the street here, fully in line with the current papal usurper, that would be happy to accommodate these murderers.

Me, too! I’m impressed to see a Bishop call them out. Go to confession, Little Dick, and change your votes and you can come back in full communion with fellow Catholics.

Good news from a courageous Catholic bishop.

Now. About the Kennedys, Pelosi, and several dozen other “practicing” (er, political) Catholics in name only in the democrat party ..... The illegal alien Mexican-American “catholic” politicians fall on the same side of the abortion issue: ONLY democrat positions, every democrat position.

Yes, the extreme socialist-communist democrats who are Jewish are a different problem. But the US bishops who side with their enemies on this matter are the root of the pro-abortion problem. And that charge goes all the way up to Rome.

Just believing Durbin is anywhere near honest does tend to make one’s head spin. Remember his claim to the illegals BO’B allowed to invade our nation? He, personally, told them that they were welcome and invited to feast on the citizens of this country. He went so far as to claim, they could also become our President, if they should so desire.

Next to BO’B, the man is but an exact duplicate in evil. That ANY church would have him gives credence to Groucho Marx famous quote.

I am sure he will do NOTHING POSITIVE, to help the ‘cause’.

Chances are he will chastise the Bishop LONG BEFORE he admonishes the CINY to either find a new ‘saviour’ or at least ‘obey’ our basic tenets.

I’d be so delighted to see other bishops follow this example-starting with the bishop in Nancy Pelosi’s diocese. The parish priest out here pays no attention to the current pope or his apostate leanings-and it’s a good thing...

Anyone who ever voted Democrat and did not confess and seek absolution should be denied communion.

I don't see that as bashing; the question is legitimate and calling out apparent hypocrisy is valid. Like the TV preacher who lives large at his congregants' expense and has a girlfriend (or boyfriend!) on the side, the Rabbi who was recently discovered to be abusing millions of dollars of federal poverty funds or the enviro activist who occupies a couple of mansions and flies his private jet all over to bully others into compliance (Al, are you reading this?). The standard is the standard; if you preach it but don't meet it, you're a hypocrite.

Not fail to meet it even though honest effort is made, but “for thee, not for me”.

The subject was the Bishop telling Durbin no communion.

I said the Pope would probably go after the Bishop

You Said the Pope will do nothing

I reiterated that if he DID anything it would be to go after the Bishop instead of those that don’t want to follow the teachings.
