Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Meditating Upon The Names and Attributes of God



"The Shade At Your Right Hand"

Psalm 121:5

5 The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

"The Shade At Your Right Hand"

Not only does this Passage Describes God as Our "Keeper", He is "The Shade on Our Right Hand". In Battle, most soldiers held their sword in their right hand. The desert sun could glint and glare off the sword and blind the soldier, making him defenseless. God is the "Shade on My Right Hand", to give clear vision for the battle ahead. He keeps us from distraction, obstruction, and obfuscation. This is a Wonderful Descriptive Name when understood in the context of ancient military tactics.

We Battle with Spiritual forces every day, so this is very relevant today!

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

On most Police Accident Reports, there is a space where one needs to fill in called "Weather Conditions". One of the options is "Bright Sun". Both the Police and the Insurance Companies are well aware that "Bright Sun" can blind a driver and actually be the cause of an accident.

In The Winter, driving to work in the Frozen Northeast is somewhat of a trial. Since I teach kids AFTER school, it is around 3:00PM when I am on the road. The sun is quite low in the sky, and is beaming into the windshield, UNDER the sunshades. I can't cover my eyes because I am driving! For a few minutes, it hovers there, stabbing my eyes with brilliant light, till the blessed moment it drops behind the trees. On go the headlights, off come the sunglasses, and it is night.

One doesn't usually think of The Light of the World providing SHADE, but, in a battle with hand-to-hand combat, the blazing sun can actually determine who wins or loses, depending upon who is blinded by it!

Amen! A great post for the new year. It’s in the minus zero temperatures here, too. Had to take my hound from the pound to church with me . . the beagle I can leave at home. It was too cold to leave him in the pen so he was better off with a ton of blankets sitting in my van in the sun in the church parking lot. He did get loose as I was unloading my Sunday School stuff. . .without fanfare, which is unusual, he got back in.

I can think of a few times the Lord blinded the enemy to save His people. Like in Sodom, when evil men were attacking Lot. The enemy attacking Elisha were blinded. Blinding Saul on the road to Damascus.

Excellent point. The low winter sun is something else. In the summer, no problem. Kind of ironic considering that we normally associate bright sunshine with summer, and brooding days with winter.

The winter sun is what is blinding.
