Evangelical Mega-Church Leads Congregation in Consecration to Sacred Heart of Jesus Prayer
Church POP ^ | 12/11/17

This is certainly surprising!

During a recent Friday night service, a pastor at New Life Church, an evangelical Protestant megachurch in Colorado Springs, CO, reportedly led the congregation in something you wouldn’t normally expect: the Sign of the Cross and a prayer of a consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Redditer /u/MarvelDCgoodwithme, who is Catholic, explained on the /r/Catholicism subreddit that his Protestant mother attends the church and thought the prayer sounded Catholic. So she took pictures of a few of the slides with the prayer, which you can see at the bottom of this article.

And sure enough, it’s a prayer for consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1899! The slides also have a picture of the statue of St. Peter in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

“She said it happened after the sermon,” the redditer explained in a private message, “the pastor presented the slides and asked the congregation to read the prayer and if they agreed with it to pray it with him. The pastor also closed his prayers with the sign of the cross.”

We’ve reached out to New Life Church to learn more about their thinking in using the prayer but haven’t yet received a response.

New Life Church was founded in 1984 and has about 10,000 members. It was in the news in the early 2000s when its founding pastor Ted Haggard admitted to using drugs and regularly visiting a male escort. He was also later accused of making unwanted sexual advances on a young man in his 20s at the church. After Haggard was dismissed from his position, the church appointed a new pastor Brady Boyd who has since greatly expand the church’s reach.

“we ARE saved by grace but we GET that grace by what we do”

OMG!

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf”

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,”

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

I think that many of those who are irreverent and overly familiar towards the Lord are going to hear an “I never knew you” from the Lord.

Here is one of Isaac Watts overlooked hymns played simply and reverently on two guitars. I hope you like it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUatOdMpAWA&disable_polymer=true

Which we don't need cause God has LAVISHED His grace on us through faith in Jesus Christ.

We don't have to go begging to God to have it stingily doled out in little parcels.

Ephesians 1:3-10 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

It is a fact - as the article I linked shows.

Post #143 - that was absolutely beautiful.

Do you know them? What a wonderful and talented brother and sister.

Per the discussion of reverence (or the lack of it) towards Christ, Our pastor last week talk about the lyrics of Away in a Manger. The line “the little Lord Jesus” is interesting. Yes, He came to us as a real human, a helpless babe. But the pastor asked each one of us in Jesus really a big Lord over all of our lives. Our finances, our relationships, our behavior.

It is an interesting dichotomy to know Christ, and also now that He is God. When I find truly amazing, and sometimes incomprehensible, is that we are allowed actual friendship with God.

“An acquaintance of mine used to refer to Christ as “My buddy JC” - and it bothered me to no end.”

***

You have a point.

At the same time, the Lord DOES invite us to speak to him as our Father, and that means a relationship that’s close enough for a little humor and a certain amount of informality.

But a certain amount of informality =! disrespect, which is a danger.

You're back again? We all thought you'd left for good.

Any one that leaves the Catholic Church does not understand the Catholic Church and by definition has unanswered questions.

As noted by another poster, it sure seems the RCC does a poor job of explaining/training to their members what ya'll are all about.

Anyone that truly understand the Catholic Church would be begging for admittance.

To the contrary.

I've been studying Roman Catholicism now for about four years. Much of it has been learned from people such as yourself.

A close comparison of what Rome teaches and what is revealed in Scripture is found to be in contradiction.

As many born again believers indicate, it was when they started reading the Scriptures did they realize the errors of Rome. I think that is one of the reasons Rome did not want the people to read the texts for themselves until fairly recently.

You forget that I left the Catholic Church and it was careful and through study of the Bible that brought me back and a further study of history that convinced me that I was correct in returning.

Exactly. My acquaintance actually used to say "My little buddy JC."

That's even worse.

But you are correct - the Bible says we are given the privilege of calling out to "Abba Father." That is akin to calling him "Dad." God loves us intensely.

I approach Christ with awe and respect, but sometimes I am guilty of not doing so. Also, many times I have sinned, and then His words come back to me: Luke 6:46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?"

I think the really good news is that Christ lowered Himself to become a man, and knows what it is like to walk around in our skin. The Bible says He was tempted in all ways that we have been tempted. He knows what is like to have greed, envy, and even lust - but He was sinless in that temptation never crossed over into sin. But He understands.

But how can you as a Roman Catholic study the Bible and understand it? We've been told you cannot do that as you're making you're own personal interpretation of Scripture.

>>When I find truly amazing, and sometimes incomprehensible, is that we are allowed actual friendship with God.<<

Very refreshing to read this in a day of presumption, over-familiarity, and sheer irreverence.

I don't know the brother and sister who performed this but have been wonderfully blessed the man times I've visited it. In my opinion it is a far more edifying and instructive Christmas hymn than the more famous song by Watts/Handel, "Joy to the World." A completely different rendering was performed by these girls from a Catholic(?)/Anglican(?) choir. It is simply exquisite so please watch:
