Should We Still Keep The Commandments?

If you are skeptical because of past experiences with religion, understand that religion is not the answer—a relationship with Christ is. There is a clear difference.

Religion says, “I have to follow rules.” A relationship with Christ says, “I want to follow His plan for my life.”

Religion says, “I have to go to church.” A relationship with Christ says, “I want to position myself to learn more, worship Him and benefit from fellowship.”

Religion offers a set of rituals; a relationship with Jesus offers a guiding light.

Religion is man’s attempt to find God; relationship assures us of His presence.

Many lose sight of purpose because they have “religion” and not a true relationship with Christ. They may know Scripture but they often do not apply it to their lives. As a result, their relationship with God is cold and distant.

A fatal statement, yet so common is, “I know what God’s Word says, but…” For example: I know that I shouldn’t watch certain movies or television programs, but I enjoy then. I know that I shouldn’t date her, but she’s very attractive. I know that I shouldn’t go there, but everyone is doing it. I know what the Bible says, but it doesn’t apply now. I know that I need to go to church, pray, and read God’s Word, but I’m too busy.

1 Cor. 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Fear didn’t make the list. Sorry.

Thanks for posting this thread. I do enjoy hearing other viewpoints even though I disagree with them. It is somewhat amusing that people imagine Heaven divided up into different denominations but sad that some think that ONLY their denomination will make it. God doesn’t choose sides. God is a side. Peace be to you.

quote-And, hey, today is Saturday. Why are you here posting on the Sabbath?

Did Rome tell you today was the Sabbath? Or did His Word?

You bash Rome so much you don’t realize you are a Roman citizen..Which may be why you are missing my point.

But you can be set free from that bondage of thinking today is the Father’s Sabbath day and tomorrow is the Resurrection Day.. That’s Rome teaching you that- Not His Word..

Which was the subtle point of my original post- which you missed completely.

quote-The seventh day is the Sabbath. Perhaps you have forgot. Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy. Perhaps your Bible reads different from mine?

The bible doesn’t read different. But I may read it different because of what He has taught me.
I doubt your bible says anything about Rome’s saturday being the 7th Day.

That is Rome dictating that. Not the bible.
Rome’s saturday is the Jewish 7th Day in our time, but that is according to Rome’s catechism and calendar-
That isn’t according to His Word or His Calendar.

Mat 22:40
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Any one who loves God are the ones who will love his or her neighbor as himself.

Mat 7:12
All things therefore whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you also to them. For this is the law and the prophets.

Jesus is telling us what love is.

1 John 4
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loves is born of God, and knows God.

8 He that loves not knows not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

If we are ashamed of love we would have to be ashamed of God.

A man loving a woman or visa versa is not sin but if they don`t use self control it can turn into that.

But Christ said to follow the Commandments — especially the two that summarize the others.

That is correct, i will take the word of Jesus above any other any time.

Nobody is teaching Christians to BREAK the commandments.

No, i don`t think any one is doing that but i do think it is like James said, we need to show our faith by our works.

Any one who has any faith will show it in some way by their works.

We need to understand that there is no argument between what Paul said and what James said.

Paul was speaking of the works of the law.
James was speaking of the works of faith.

The NT is clear we are to produce fruit.

Because of our faith in Christ we are to produce fruit. However, that production of fruit is not what saves us but is the evidence of our faith.

Not about luck, bipolar.

Being able to see how the enemy works is a great blessing that I pray more get to see.

Rome has conformed the world to itself.
Which has been predicted in the scriptures..

We need not accept the premise that He placed Rome in charge of His times or laws..

Which we can see, with His help, that they’ve changed both (Daniel 7). And conformity to a lying world never leads to genuine Truth.

All for His Glory!

I’ve got a lot going on today, so I had to duck out earlier and haven’t read all the comments here yet, but I remembered Dr. MacArthur’s helpful article on sabbath keeping. At the end of the article he refers readers to D.A. Carson’s book on the topic. My understanding of the Sabbath is very much in line with Dr. Carson’s.

Are the Sabbath laws binding on Christians today?

should We Still Keep the Commandments?

Seems like a darned good idea to me!

But; I must confess; that I, as well as probably others in this thread, haven't managed to do so completely.

So I guess the only thing I can do is to throw myself on the mercy of the court.

My understanding of the Sabbath is very much in line with Dr. Carson’s.

Mine runs along this line of reasoning found in the bible:

Romans 14:5-12King James Version (KJV)

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.

For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.

For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

So rather than defend your own point of view you post a link and say I think this guy might be right. I did read the article and found inaccuracies in it. Confusing the issue for some is the fact that there were ceremonial Sabbaths that are no longer in effect. The Sabbath that commemorates creation is still in effect. It is the one that identifies God as Creator of the Heavens and the earth(s). It gives reason as to why He is worthy of worship. The establishment of the 7th day Sabbath preceded the races and divisions of men and their creeds. It will be a day of worship for all of eternity.

We do realize; OF COURSE; that the SABBATH begins at sundown on Friday; right?

Great text. There’s also

“Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:”
—Colossians 2:16

OK.

Please answer these two questions then.

Why did God give the Law?

Why do we have to obey it?

You can give either official church teaching or your own personal opinion or both. Just clarify which it is in your answer.
