Outcry Greets Vatican Decision to Reaffirm Ban on Gay Priests

VATICAN CITY (RNS) A Vatican decision to reaffirm its opposition to gay priests has angered activists who thought Pope Francis was changing Rome’s attitudes toward homosexuality.

In a new document on the priesthood, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Clergy reiterated a 2005 statement declaring that men with “deep-seated homosexual tendencies” or those who “support the so-called ‘gay culture’” cannot be priests.

“Pope Francis has a lot of explaining to do by approving the newest Vatican instruction,” said Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, which campaigns for LGBT rights in the church.

"Francis’ famous ‘Who am I to judge?’ statement in 2013 was made in response to a question about gay men in the priesthood,” DeBernardo said. “That response indicated very plainly that he did not have a problem with a gay priest’s sexual orientation.

“It’s not too late for the pope to retract this document.”

The new document noted that the church’s policy on gay priests has not changed since the last Vatican pronouncement on the subject in 2005.

Many have been hoping for a new approach from the church toward gay priests because of Francis’ statements and the fact that he has gay friends and has spoken against bias toward gays. He has even used the label “gay” rather than the more clinical term “homosexual” that many church officials view as less likely to appear to approve a gay orientation.

“This document is extremely disappointing in its approach to gay men called to be priests,” said Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, an organization of Catholics committed to equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The ban is apparently not well enforced. After all, almost all of the pedophile priests were as queer as a three-dollar bill.

There are plenty of religions that embrace homosexual clergy, these folks are welcome to join one of those.

Being homosexual isn't necessarily a sin.
ACTING on it is.

Which religions are those?
All cultures/faiths consider homosexuality and/or bisexuality WRONG.

Also, if said clergy is supposed to be chaste then it doesn't matter WHAT her/his orientation is because s/he must be chaste.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI sent emissaries to all the seminaries in the U. S. to inspect for signs of homosexuality. The seminaries were cleaned out.

Now someone entering the seminary undergoes a two day psyche
exam, parents are interviewed, pastors are interviewed, friends are interviewed......it’s a long, drawn out process. I have two friends who have sons in the seminary and they can vouch for this testing before a seminarian is even accepted.

As a result, our local seminary has 157 seminarians now in attendance.

I can send you all the FR links when all this happened if you want to read about it.

“Gay Priests” brought the church the pedophile scandal and bankrupted a number of dioceses.

Used to be sort of like that when someone was vetted for a military security clearance.

Used to be.

Sadly, I suspect that is why the ban is remaining (rather than morality); either way, I’ll take it!

You telling me about it is sufficient. You've never steered me wrong.

Ah, the Panzer Pope. He was something else.
His colleagues said that the had "a towering intellect and a backbone of tempered steel."

THANK YOU for the information.

These are people who believe, rightfully or not, that the Roman Catholic Church is THE church established by Jesus, and all others are impostors or poor offshoots.

They want to radically change this church, making it NOT the church.

Any backing down on this position in the face of the homo-outcry, even very slightly, will be a deadly victory for the sodomites. And I don’t expect the Vatican to stand firm.

Even today, the battle rages. Just as it did in the First Century AD.

Every one of us has the obligation, whenever the opportunity emerges, to affirm the truth and, by God's grace and with His heavenly hosts, save the citadel of the Church.

These threats and crises are not new. I recommend reading deeply into Church history. After the shock passes, it steadies one.

God will carry His Bride to victory, and He will do it as He always has in the past: by raising up saints.

I have to think the number of gay men becoming priests has dropped as a % since the late 70s. I think that explains the precipitous drop in instances of abuse since it peaked in the late 70s-early 80s. Less gay men became priests since the broader culture accepted gays more and more, older gay abusing priests died and weren’t replaced by other gay men. Now they can go to other Christian groups and be openly gay clergy in relationships/ or recognized as ‘married’ and be specifically celebrated for it in leadership positions.
