Russian Patriarch consecrates Orthodox cathedral just yards from Eiffel Tower in Paris

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has consecrated a new cathedral in central Paris, just yards away from the Eiffel Tower, with hundreds of worshippers attending the service he led there on Sunday.

Trinity Cathedral was opened as part of a Russian cultural and spiritual center on the banks of the Seine River in the French capital.

Around 500 Orthodox believers from the Russian community in Paris, including the offspring of Russia’s former princely houses, packed the church for the event.

Renowned French singer, Mireille Mathieu, and Russian super-model, Natalia Vodianova, were also attending.

The Patriarch called the new church a symbol of the close ties between the peoples and the cultures of Russia and France.

“It’s a monument to our close relations in the past and, certainly, a symbol of what awaits us in the future,” he said.

The Orthodox Church leader also thanked France for its hospitality to the Russian immigrants who arrived in the country after the 1917 revolution.

He’s a Putin-approved theocrat. There is no separation of church in state in Russian, and very little freedom for religions not approved by Putin. This isn’t Christianity, this “Patriarch” anymore than the Hitler-approved German church was Christian in the 1930s and 40s.

I seem to recall there was some contention about this, maybe a year ago. Russians who escaped the Communists were upset I thought? But Patriarch Kirill's statement made reference to those people.

Is Kirill one of the goods guys? He gets a lot of flak but Hilarion gave a statement on his behalf at Francis' so-called "synod on the family" that I thought was good. Or maybe I'm misremembering completely.

That’s good. There will never be someone radicalized by attending the church. No one is going to run out and blow up things after attending a service.

Was there a “Hitler-approved German church” in Germany? I’m not sure it an appropriate analogy. For political reasons, Hitler’s idea was to temporarily tolerate Catholics, the largest unified religious voting bloc, while due to the diffuse nature of Protestant hierarchy, he could divide and control them.

Hitler was an atheist, who, like Marxists, wanted to remove religious consciousness from people and replace it with something which served the state (and german race).

Whatever you think about Putin, he simply is returning to the form of Russian society and governance that has existed for 1000 years - the Orthodox Church as a pillar of stability in Russia, a defining characteristic of the Russian people, who will also be a tool of governance. In that regard I see it as no different from what was once the Church of England.

Whew. You need to read more about the struggles of Christians under Hitler and the struggles of Christians in Russia who are not in the Putin-approved church. Have your read: “Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy” by Eric Metaxas. Christians today who do not go along with Putin are persona non grata. Why do Christian FReepers carry water or ignore the very UN-Christian nature of KGB Colonel Putin turned ultra-nationalist Russian?

You are letting your own feelings and biases speak for you. What I said: Putin is simply returning to the Pre-Marxist norm that Russia has practiced for 1000 years. The Russian Orthodox Church is seen as part of Russian society and culture, which should be promoted and preserved as a means towards stable society - and government.

Many nations do this. Most nations of the West did this as well up until a century ago - it is how the world works. Deal with it.

The idea of “religious freedom and pluralism” is an American invention. It has worked here because it is part of American culture and our system of governance - and there has been a common thread of Christianity in the USA.

We ourselves will find out how well religious pluralism works if/when Muslims become 20% of the population living among a population of mostly atheists.

As former Lutheran, I know about the so-called “German Christian Church”, which made “Aryanism” the centerpiece of it’s cracked “doctrine”. It was thus not really Christian.

The Russian Orthodox Church is nothing like that whatsoever. It is truly Orthodox, and we are in communion with it. So stop your ignorance, and/or your lies!!!!

That’s right. The Aryan Christian Church was in no way Christian. Yet, that’s what Bonhoeffer had to fight. But the Russian Orthodox Church is truly under Putin’s communion, and you’re probably not aware of this, or you don’t care.

Did I say I supported it? I don't support hurricanes, but they are a fact of life, so I deal with them as is. George Soros says the same things as you about Putin and Russia - and Soros has funded and supported many "NGOs" to help move Russia towards his way of thinking - promoting LGBT, open-borders, a quasi-poltical media, etc...

Russians, after their total economic, spiritual, and economic collapse, and 25 year adjustment process, are very wary of foreigners of all stripes wanting to put their own desires on the country, many for devious reasons. I do not blame them for that suspicion.
