Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Book of Psalms

(Psalm 34)

Psalm 34[a][b]

Of David. When he pretended to be insane before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

1 I will extol the Lord at all times;
    his praise will always be on my lips.
2 I will glory in the Lord;
    let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the Lord with me;
    let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
    he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant;
    their faces are never covered with shame.
6 This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
    he saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
    and he delivers them.

8 Taste and see that the Lord is good;
    blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
    for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
11 Come, my children, listen to me;
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Whoever of you loves life
    and desires to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue from evil
    and your lips from telling lies.
14 Turn from evil and do good;
    seek peace and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears are attentive to their cry;
16 but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
    to blot out their name from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

19 The righteous person may have many troubles,
    but the Lord delivers him from them all;
20 he protects all his bones,
    not one of them will be broken.

21 Evil will slay the wicked;
    the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord will rescue his servants;
    no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This Magnificent Psalm is also an Acrostic in Hebrew, which makes it even more brilliant. Each line starts with the next consecutive letter in the Hebrew Alphabet. Yet, even without this poetic device, the translation is noble and beautiful.

Many of us remember the movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. In this movie, based on the Ken Kesey novel, Jack Nickleson plays a character who fakes insanity to get out of going to prison. He gets more than he bargains for, however, in the character of Nurse Ratchet!

David composed this Psalm after an episode in 1 Samuel 21, when David is on the run from Saul. At one point he is confronted by the King of Gath (Goliath's hometown!) and is in danger of losing his life. He fakes madness by acting like a crazy person, and the King lets him go. Since there was nothing resembling modern psychiatric care back then, the pagan king may have been genuinely frightened by David's behavior, imagining that he was touched by "gods" or demons, or whatever. Maybe he even thought it was contagious! In any case, David got away, but does not ascribe his escape to his own cleverness. Instead, he composed this wonderful Psalm of Praise and Worship, ascribing ALL the Glory to God.

How many times do we ourselves narrowly escape a bad situation, and congratulate ourselves upon "dodging a bullet"? Remember, ALL good things come from the Father, and we are to praise HIM when we are delivered from a bad situation.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

New situation, new excuse for a song. :)
Your comments remind me of the Psalm you posted yesterday:

Ps 33

Praise the Lord with the harp (kinor);
    make music to him
on the ten-stringed lyre.
3 Sing to him a new song;
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.

>>>

Yerushalayim shel zahav
v'shel nechoshet v'shel ohr
halo l'chol shiraich
ani kinor..

Jerusalem of gold
of copper and of light
For all your songs
I am a kinor (harp).

Yerushalayim Shel Zahav - Ofra Haza (Live)

For all of Jerusalem's songs, the singer is the harp, the instrument of praise...

David, the sweet singer of Israel..

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, Jerusalem shel zahav (of gold, of David)

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them
that fear him, and delivereth them." Psalm 34:7 (KJV)

Detail – East Window – Bath Abbey
Somerset, United Kingdom

WILL bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.

22 The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.
