Ben Franklin's Appeal to Prayer
American Rhetoric Online Speech Bank ^ | June 28, 1787 | Ben Franklin

Posted on 10/17/2016 10:04:35 AM PDT by GoldenState_Rose

Mr. President:

The small progress we have made after 4 or five weeks close attendance & continual reasonings with each other -- our different sentiments on almost every question, several of the last producing as many noes as ays, is methinks a melancholy proof of the imperfection of the Human Understanding. We indeed seem to feel our own wont of political wisdom, since we have been running about in search of it. We have gone back to ancient history for models of government, and examined the different forms of those Republics which having been formed with the seeds of their own dissolution now no longer exist. And we have viewed Modern States all round Europe, but find none of their Constitutions suitable to our circumstances.

In this situation of this Assembly groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the contest with G. Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the Divine Protection. -- Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a Superintending providence in our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need His assistance.

I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth -- that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that "except the Lord build they labor in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall be become a reproach and a bye word down to future age. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human Wisdom, and leave it to chance, war, and conquest.

I therefore beg leave to move -- that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the Clergy of this City be requested to officiate in that service.

Another prayer thread. We need to spend more time in prayer than in railing against our biased media. In considering the works of God, than in the futile distractions of Satan. The Founders have much to teach us, as usual.

The Bible, in its original languages, is the revealed Word of YHWH, the Ain Sof, the Creator of the Universe. The entire Word established the boundary conditions for all significant events in the Universe from beginning to end.

Everyone has free will until they bump up against a boundary condition that involves them. Then YHWH will “harden your heart” and you are stuck with your decision. In Quantum Mechanics it is called “spontaneous symmetry breaking” that collapses a superposition of states into one observed state.

We are very near the end of the Bible. The Revelation 12:1-2 great sign in the heavens will happen September 23-24, 2017. There is strong evidence that the matching verses, 12:5-6 mean that the people who believe in the Messiah’s First Coming, and his imminent return, will be “caught up to God and His Throne” and that the people who believe in the Promise, but missed Him the first time will be protected for 1260 days, from all Hell breaking out on Earth.

If you study the Word, you will find out that “nations” are very important to YHWH, and trying to unite all people in one government/religion, is despised by YHWH. It started with the Tower of Babel, so when the EU made their headquarters to look like a painting of the Tower of Babel, you know they are in trouble.

The United States of America was founded as a nation “ruled by God”, which is what Israel means. Many of the founders thought of it as a “New Israel”. Jonathan Cahn, has explored this extensively, and the events surrounding the 9/11 attack on the USA are compelling, and seem to identify the USA with the Ten Tribes of Israel that were dispersed by the Assyrians.

It is undeniable that decedents of Judah, Benjamin, and remnants of Levi and the ten other tribes that went into the Babylonian Captivity, are moving back into the original Promised Land (The Modern State of Israel). But only YHWH knows where the rest of those Ten Tribes ended up.

So that brings us to what can be happening here in the United States of America in the last year of the Age of Grace, the Church Age, the period between the First and Second Coming, or the two days between the final dispersion of the Jews and their regathering in Israel. It doesn’t matter what you call it. It is here, now.

As the Word says will happen in the Last Days, almost all the organized churches have fallen away from the original Gospel, to one degree or another. That means that there are a lot of Lost Sheep out there to be gathered in before the final harvest.

So what has YHWH done? Well, in the rest of the world He is gathering them in the old fashion way, but allowing Lucifer to persecute the Hell out of the Christians. This really spreads the faith, as it did in the Days of the Apostles.

With the United States, all fat, dump and happy from His material blessing, and now under the governmental control of the Luciferian New World Order, and their fly attracting leaders, He needed a different approach.

His answer appears to be one Donald John (voice crying in the wilderness, get it?) Trump who appears to be a melding of Samson, Cyrus and Nehemiah.

Read Judges 13-16 and then look at the characteristics Donald Trump shares with Samson: Doesn’t drink, ever; has really wild hair; is really harsh if you treat him badly or unfairly; ran around with a lot of foreign women.

You can read Isaiah 45 (FORTY FIVE! get it) to find out about Cyrus, a gentile who was God’s Instrument in punishing the Babylonians, and returning Judah back to Jerusalem.

Of course, Nehemiah was the one whom King Artaxerxes, sent back to Jerusalem to actually BUILD THE WALL (get it?) and after that to bust up the corrupt establishment and restore the Law of Moses to the land. Read the whole book of Nehemiah and think of how it could be paralleled in the first few months of a Trump Administration.

So, I think that if we all listen closely to what the Holy Spirit is telling each us Members of the Body of Christ to do, which may include working hard and praying for Donald Trump, then I think we get a Nehemiah period before we are harvested and the Luciferian New World Order folks get their wish to be rid of us, and to have the world all to themselves.

Look, if you want to ignore the fact that the stars and planets align as it is written in Revelation 12:1-2 on September 23-24, 2017, be my guest. If you have confessed with your mouth that Jesus Christ is LORD, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, then you will be saved. That means that you, probably, get to go on the first harvest whether you believe in it or not.

I have trouble believing this quote attributed to Franklin. By all other accounts, Franklin lived a libertine life, scorning everything written in Scripture. He had repentance in his 80’s? Yeah, God COULD do that. Did He really? Just skeptical, that’s all. Sometimes heroes of the Republic aren’t what they seem (e.g., Lincoln).

[I have trouble believing this quote attributed to Franklin.]

Read the account of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN from WILLIAM FEDERER’S American Minute. FRANKLIN was a Christian.

On JULY 26, 1775, Benjamin Franklin became the first Postmaster General of the United States, a position he held under the British Crown before the Revolution.

Franklin’s public career began when he organized Pennsylvania’s first volunteer militia during threaten attacks from Spanish and French ships.

Franklin then proposed a General Fast, which was approved by the Colony’s Council and printed in his Pennsylvania Gazette, December 12, 1747:

“As the calamities of a bloody War...seem every year more nearly to approach us...there is just reason to fear that unless we humble ourselves before the Lord & amend our Ways, we may be chastized with yet heavier Judgments,

We have, therefore, thought fit...to appoint... a Day of Fasting & Prayer, exhorting all, both Ministers & People, to observe the same with becoming seriousness & attention, & to join with one accord in the most humble & fervent Supplications;

That Almighty God would mercifully interpose and still the Rage of War among the Nations & put a stop to the effusion of Christian Blood.”

Franklin published evangelist George Whitefield’s sermons, thereby spreading The Great Awakening Revival.

Franklin established a volunteer fire department, a circulating public library, an insurance company, a city police force, a night watch and a hospital.

He set up the lighting of city streets and was the first to suggest Daylight Savings Time.

He invented bifocal glasses, the Franklin Stove, swim fins, the lightning rod, and coined the electrical terms “positive” and “negative.”

In 1754, Franklin wrote a pamphlet, “Information to Those Who Would Remove to America,” for Europeans interested in sending their youth to this land:

“Hence bad examples to youth are more rare in America, which must be a comfortable consideration to parents. To this may be truly added, that serious religion, under its various denominations, is not only tolerated, but respected and practised.

Atheism is unknown there; Infidelity rare and secret; so that persons may live to a great age in that country without having their piety shocked by meeting with either an Atheist or an Infidel.

And the Divine Being seems to have manifested his approbation of the mutual forbearance and kindness with which the different sects treat each other; by the remarkable prosperity with which he has been pleased to favor the whole country.”

On September 28, 1776, as President of Pennsylvania’s Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin signed the State’s first Constitution, “the most radically democratic Frame of Government the world had ever seen.”

Pennsylvania’s Constitution stated:

“Government ought to be instituted...to enable the individuals...to enjoy their natural rights...which the Author of Existence has bestowed upon man;

and whenever these great ends...are not obtained, the people have a right...to change it, and take such measures as to them may appear necessary to promote their safety and happiness...”

Pennsylvania’s Constitution continued:

“All men have a natural and unalienable right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences...

Nor can any man, who acknowledges the being of a God, be justly deprived or abridged of any civil right...

No authority...shall in any case interfere with...the right of conscience in the free exercise of religious worship.”

Pennsylvania’s Constitution added:

“And each member...shall make...the following declaration, viz:

I do believe in one God, the Creator and Governor of the Universe, the Rewarder of the good and the Punisher of the wicked. And I do acknowledge the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by Divine Inspiration.

And no further or other religious test shall ever hereafter be required.”

Pennsylvania’s Constitution had in Section 45:

“Laws for the encouragement of virtue, and prevention of vice and immorality, shall be...constantly kept in force... Religious societies ... incorporated for the advancement of religion...shall be encouraged.”

At the end of the Revolutionary War, Franklin signed the Treaty of Paris, September 3, 1783, which began:

“In the name of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity...”

As Pennsylvania’s President (Governor), Ben Franklin hosted the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where on June 28, 1787, he moved:

“That henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning.”

When Congress began debating slavery, Franklin became President of Pennsylvania’s Society for the Abolition of Slavery.

In his last published letter ( Federal Gazette, March 23, 1790), Franklin satirically indicted the Southern States for defending slavery with the same arguments as Muslim pirates:

“If we cease our cruises against Christians, how shall we...make slaves of their people...to cultivate our land...to perform common labors... Must we be our own slaves: And is there not more compassion due to us as Mussulmen than to these Christian dogs.

We have now about 50,000 slaves in and near Algiers... If we then cease taking and plundering the infidel ships and making slaves of the seamen and passengers, our lands will become of no value for want of cultivation.”

Franklin composed his epitaph:

“THE BODY of
B. FRANKLIN, Printer.
Like the cover of an old book,
Its contents torn out,
And stripped of its lettering and gilding,
Lies here, food for worms;
Yet the work itself shall not be lost,
For it will as he believ’d
appear once more,
In a new, and more beautiful edition,
Corrected and improved
By The AUTHOR.”

Franklin wrote April 17, 1787:

” Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”

Yes. Exactly. He became more religious toward the end of his life. His deep and intricate involvment in the nation’s founding was a spiritual experience and turning point for him as an individual.

Franklin witnessed history being made firsthand and up close: learning much about the nature of man and civilization in the process. He was present in rooms filled with some of the greatest minds as they debated matters of faith and reason on a daily basis!

He and many like him could not shake off the undeniable sense of God’s presence and Providence over the whole ordeal.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Father God, may the church recognize this moment. May Your people understand that this is not the time to be lukewarm. May we humble ourselves, kneel before You, and ask for Your mercy and grace. Father God, may this be a time for the out pouring of Your Holy Spirit. May we be revived by the latter rain spoke of in the Book of Joel. Father God, may this nation be granted another chance to serve You, to love You.
These things we ask in Jesus name.

GoldenState_Rose: "He and many like him could not shake off the undeniable sense of God’s presence and Providence over the whole ordeal."

Most notably, George Washington, but also others nearly as famous, John Adams for one.
Yes, Jefferson is sometimes accused of being a mere deist, but as president he used the Capitol building for church services.
Not much of a wall separating ol' Tom from his religion there!
