Pastor Andy Stanley says the Bible is too hard to defend

Evangelical pastor preaches that the Bible isn’t the foundation for the Christian faith

by Lita Cosner and Scott Gillis

Published: 22 September 2016 (GMT+10)

Andy Stanley has a church network of over 30,000 people in the Atlanta area, and his church was rated the fastest-growing in America in 2014 and 2015.1 Recently, he has been criticized by many evangelicals for saying that we need to take the focus off the Bible and put it on the Resurrection, because he claims that gives us a firmer foundation for our faith. As Stanley put it: “We believe Jesus rose from the dead not because the Bible says so. It is way better than that! Christianity does not hang by the thread of ‘The Bible told me so’.”2 And: “The original version [of Christianity], the pre-Bible version, was defensible, it was endurable, it was persecutable, it was fearless, it was compassionate, and it was compelling,” but he claims “it is next to impossible to defend the entire Bible”.2

What is your take on the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16?

He went to Dallas Theological.

Swindoll’s DTS is NOT Chafer’s DTS.

How do you smash a system of thinking?....You can’t avoid it becuase in today’s world and in the faith it’s a battle for ‘the mind’...not the emotions...and our weapons are not carnal but mighty thru God to the puling down of “strongholds” and everything that sets itself up against God. You can’t evade the intellectual defense against the gospel message without using devine truth applied by the Holy Spirit...and that truth is found in the scriptures as the ultimate “authority”....

It’s written....that we bring down those fortresses and bring every thought captive to Christ... This is a battle for the mind. And any ministry that avoids the mind and all of the possible and real defenses that people have in the mind is going to live with ‘false conversions’ based on emotions and not truth.....Jesus himself saying “I am the truth”.....

But then again, even in the good old days, DTS cranked out Bob Thieme at some point - so nothing’s perfect.

I’d blame Andy Stanley’s last 20 years rather than his seminary background, at this point.

“I’d believe it if it said Jonah swallowed the great fish.”

Jesus and also the book of Jonah itself indicate that Jonah DIED in the whale.

Then God raised up both Jonah from the fish and Jesus from the tomb.

OK. A non-Christian hell-bound “pastor” denying biblical truth. Got it.

My understanding is Stanley was not the one who sought this and in fact did much to prevent his wife from leaving....years later even family members admitted that “something” changed her and why Stanley sought counsel for them both many times.

HE had done everything humanly possible to save that union..but as is said...if the unbelieving depart let them depart, a sister or brother is not in bondage in such cases....and he never did remarry.

....”I’ve concluded that Andy is passing the buck. HE himself doesn’t REALLY believe the Scriptures”.....

He has to create a straw an because mush of what the seeker friendly churches run into is the truth of the scriptures which does not defend but opposes many of the ways they conduct their services and their churches overall.

There’s a lot of “control” measures used by male teachers in the small groups that meet. Especially of the youth..

I have family members who attend one of these churches and the parents voiced concerns about a couple of their teachers as the teenage girls had all the markings of seeing their teachers like one would a Hollywood idol.....and the teachers liked the “fame”.

Has he ever read the Bible?

Not likely.

.
All of the things he claims can’t be defended have been proven by hard physical facts.

His problem seems to be simply that he is a child of darkness, and has turned the Holy Spirit away.

One of the most idiotic statements that I have ever read!

” I now say the bible contains the word of God rather than the bible “is” the word of God”

seems hard to square with:

“From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness,”

“the date of the earth’s creation is not at all mentioned in the Bible.”

Correct
Anglican Bishop Ussher calculated that number down to the day.
People who believed as he did were referred to as Ussherites.

...” so you pick what you want to believe.”....

Well that’s exactly what the seeker friendly churches do... but you know most Christians who are solid in God’s word can go into a church and listen to ‘the opening’ and tell just how deep their theology is.

....”His problem seems to be simply that he is a child of darkness, and has turned the Holy Spirit away.”.....

His father was concerned about that for years when he broke away to form his own church..and they were quite at odds for many years.

Mr. Stanley has elevated his own understanding above Yehova.

Somebody else did that back about 6000 years ago.

The date of the creation is zero.

Time itself was created at the same time as the Earth.

The gematra of Beresheet in ancient characters clearly indicates that the totality of the physical creation would be 7000 years.

Usher did an amazingly good job with what was available to him. He only missed by about 250 years.
