Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Book of Proverbs

(Proverbs 12)

12 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
    but whoever hates correction is stupid.

2 Good people obtain favor from the Lord,
    but he condemns those who devise wicked schemes.

3 No one can be established through wickedness,
    but the righteous cannot be uprooted.

4 A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown,
    but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.

5 The plans of the righteous are just,
    but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.

6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood,
    but the speech of the upright rescues them.

7 The wicked are overthrown and are no more,
    but the house of the righteous stands firm.

8 A person is praised according to their prudence,
    and one with a warped mind is despised.

9 Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant
    than pretend to be somebody and have no food.

10 The righteous care for the needs of their animals,
    but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.

11 Those who work their land will have abundant food,
    but those who chase fantasies have no sense.

12 The wicked desire the stronghold of evildoers,
    but the root of the righteous endures.

13 Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk,
    and so the innocent escape trouble.

14 From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things,
    and the work of their hands brings them reward.

15 The way of fools seems right to them,
    but the wise listen to advice.

16 Fools show their annoyance at once,
    but the prudent overlook an insult.

17 An honest witness tells the truth,
    but a false witness tells lies.

18 The words of the reckless pierce like swords,
    but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

19 Truthful lips endure forever,
    but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

20 Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil,
    but those who promote peace have joy.

21 No harm overtakes the righteous,
    but the wicked have their fill of trouble.

22 The Lord detests lying lips,
    but he delights in people who are trustworthy.

23 The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves,
    but a fool’s heart blurts out folly.

24 Diligent hands will rule,
    but laziness ends in forced labor.

25 Anxiety weighs down the heart,
    but a kind word cheers it up.

26 The righteous choose their friends carefully,
    but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

27 The lazy do not roast[a] any game,
    but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.

28 In the way of righteousness there is life;
    along that path is immortality.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Although I don't normally recommend "Scripture-Dipping" (blindly picking a verse at random) to find the answers to our problems, I actually had a wonderful experience with this particular chapter in Proverbs. A lady called the Christian Counseling Center and got me on the line. She was distraught about the death of her dog, and another "minister" had berated her for feeling so bad about an animal. Well, it was my first night on the job, and I was just starting to get into the Bible, and the manual had NOTHING about this particular issue, so I said a prayer, opened my Bible to the middle somewhere, and there it was:

" Proverbs 12:10New American Standard Bible (NASB)

10.A righteous man has regard for the life of his animal,
But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel."

The verse jumped out at me. I told the lady that God is saying that caring for your animals is righteous, and cruelty to animals is wicked. The verse doesn't "anthropomorphize" God's creatures. They ARE animals, under the authority of humans, but we are NOT to be cruel to them. We prayed together and she left the call comforted.

As I said, "Scripture Dipping" is not the best way to receive guidance from the Bible, but, in this particular case, God used it to help this lady, and help me too, because, at the time, I didn't have a clue!

And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

HOSO loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish. 2 A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn. 3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

9 He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.

10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

11 He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.

12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.

13 The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.

14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.

15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

16 A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.

17 He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.

18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.

21 There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.

22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.

25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.

26 The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.

27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.

28 In the way of righteousness is life: and in the pathway thereof there is no death.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

And we pray for our pets when they are sick or leave us, they become part of our family. Once in Rome I participated to the blessings of the animals in a Church - dogs, cats, birds etc. - not a sound came from the animals during the service, they knew...

I was in a chapel that was adorned with antique bird cages with live songbirds in them. At the end of the service, we sang “IN THE GARDEN” and like they were on cue, the birds hushed their singing.

I found this verse about animals, and God’s covenant with them:

And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. Hosea 2:18

And in Mark when Jesus was tempted by Satan for 40 days, not only did the angles minister to Him, but also the wild beasts. I believe like our pets minister to us, they did so with the Lord.

And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him. Mark 1:13

So much there.

What a wonderful story. That was no "dipping." it's called immersion.

Better to dip our toes into living waters, than to "swim with the fishes", or something like that.

We prayed together and she left the call comforted.

There's the berating messiah, then there's the real one who has compassion for the hurting, even if the hurt is an "insignificant" first world problem. Can you just imagine how many people would be lifted up if they knew they could approach the Redeemer with their "silly" problems?

He is well aware that "somebody has it worse", but hurting is hurting. He was commissioned to fix ALL of it, so there. :)
